Just saw this in the character creator. Been wanting this for a long time and have seen it requested a lot so glad it's finally here but since I enjoy complaining, I do hope it eventually makes it into the actual spells display of the character sheet. Still, Character Portrait > Preferences > Show Level-Scaled Spells is definitely a big improvement.
The way it should work is asking you which level you want to cast it at when you click the "cast spell" button and then do the math accordingly. As it is now you have to activate the feature on the sheet again if you want to know what the upcasted spell does. So for a wizard with lots of different spells it is more work now.
Don't get me wrong the feature is important but without the other functionallity it is still not worth turning on. If there was a simple toggle right next to the spells directly on the sheet it would be at least ok if still not perfect.
That is a basic function every vtt has and should have been added to the sheet long ago in my opinion.
Would love to see this toggle/switch right on the character sheet itself too. :)
You can. On the character sheet up by the character’s name there is a little down arrow. Click/tap that and a dropdown will appear. Click/tap “preferences,” it has a cog symbol (⚙️) next to it. A slideout will appear on the right hand side and you can toggle it on/off there.

If you click/tap the spell in question, you can select the level at which you want to cast it at the top of the spell using the ➖ and ➕ symbols and the damage is automatically adjusted before you even hit “cast” so you can see the difference before even committing to casting it.
IMHO, I feel that spells that could be upcast should have the blue font as a quick visual guide as to which spells can be upcast for additional benefits. That way we get the compact, streamlined display, and we get more information at a glance. What does everyone else think about that idea?

Tthat is actually a very good idea.
As I have mentioned on Discord maybe something like this could also be added:
A color code for spells that need bought components that are needed (have a cost but are not consumed) and the spells where these are consumed by the spell (maybe red? idk).
I tried the upcast thin, and yes it is a lot better but still. This menu shouls come up when I press the cast button. That would be one klick less and the functionality is already there.
Of course when you want to cast it on level 1 it would mean more klicks...
Would it be possible to have this feature on a per spell basis? So only the spells I want to upcast are in the list?
I would rather not use more colour-coding than is already present in the spell lists. (1 in 20 men have green deficiency colour blindness, and so don't use colour cues so much; less fractions of the population have other types of colour blindness.)
Maybe tiny icons to indicate "expensive material component" and/or "can be cast at higher levels). In a similar way to the C and R icons which are put next to the name.
I forgot about color blindness, but an icon could work as well or a message that pops up when you cast it. Or if we want the luxury treatment, when you cast a spell it checks your inventory for the needed component and if it is consumed by the spell it will automatically remove the amount needed. If you don’t have it, no casting.

Yes to this - simple and effective!
