Map - Phandelver and Below
Tokens
Monsters - all from the Phandelver source
Characters - DnD Beyond generated tokens
Five players and DM using multiple devices:
iPad (1)
iPhone (3)
MacBook (2)
Spectator view from DM MacBook to TV
After playing for about 30 minutes the player on the iPad was the first to get the error message:
"Our steps got out of sync thanks to Otto's Irresistible Dance. Please refresh to help us save our Wisdom Saving Throw!
(We ran into an error while loading the map. If this continues to persist, please contact support.)"
After another 30 minutes, the rest of us got that message. We all shut down our browsers. I deleted the map and re-added it. It finally came back but, of course, I had to add in all the monsters again. The players had to add their tokens also.
It was pretty frustrating. What was supposed to be an exciting night of semi-climactic gameplay ended up being filled with a lot of technical crap. I'm probably not going to use Maps for a while.
You need to maintain the DM Map open full time so it dont crash. Its anoying since I play in a TV using Spectator mode, and my Laptop is used for DND Beyond tracker, dice roling, notes, etc.
I have just DM a one shot using maps online. If you maintain the map open all the time, no problem works fine. But if you need to change tabs and MAPS is not the main focus... it crashes...
Having the same refresh issue, spector on one monitor and the DM side on another but I am using the map just for Maps and Fog of War so dont need to keep it open. The constant refreshing and resetting of the map when minis are on the table is very annoying.
I am using an iPad hooked up to a “Beamer” to show the map on a wall to my players. That device stays on this map the whole time. Another iPad is used for me to run encounters and the DM view of the map (called DM iPad for further reference). It normally runs fine but last session (two days ago) the “Otto’s Irresistable Dance” Error showed up on the DM iPad. And it does not go away whatever I do. This error now persists for several days - I started a new campaign, loaded up completely different maps but it just does not work. It kinda seems to be tied to the DM iPad because i can log in with a phone and use that as the dm device and it works fine, but the DM iPad now constantly shows this error. Doesn’t matter which browser I use, chrome, Firefox, safari, all show this problem now. I even reset the whole iPad and it does not work. Means i am using a phone as my dm device now.
Somehow this error seems to be limited to the “DM iPad” (it’s an old iPad Pro 10,5 inch running IPad OS 17.5 Beta 2) but it still is annoying as ****. If I use the other iPad as “DM iPad” it works fine but this one device now constantly crashes on the page.
Agreed. Same thing has been happening to me weekly now, for two separate groups, and for the past 3 weeks.
It sucks because the only reason I get stuff from the Marketplace is for the “ease” of just opening a map from the books. Now even that is not possible. Might just go back to Owlbear Rodeo for now.
My problem with the “DM iPad” persists. I literally can’t use maps anymore on that device. Any tech savvy people here who could point in the direction what the problem with that specific device could be?
Can use it on the other devices (though with the same problems the other ppl are describing here), just not on that particular one.
I've been having this issue for 2 weeks now. My fiance who is in the same campaign can can see the DM's maps just fine and we sit only feet apart from one another.
Update: It will work on my other devices but not the desktop PC I use for gaming. I've cleared cache and browsing history, tried multiple different browsers, and short of doing an entire factory reinstall, I've run out of ideas of what could be causing this issue.
Maps is still completely unusable on one of my iPads. The same problem now showing up for one of my players. So far we tried to use different browsers, completely resetting the devices, setting it up with a different Apple ID and resetting from a Beta ipadOS to a stable version. So far nothing worked.
I can still use it fine (means with the occasional crash that’s kinda normal on maps) on other devices. Just broken on one iPad and now on one of my players devices, too.
A reminder that Maps is currently in ALPHA and this will mean there are bugs and issues. Please temper your expectations with that in mind
Yes, of course. The Problem for me and also some players at our table simply is that we can’t even use it on certain devices. I talked on discord (with you) about it and the only “help” was “seems to be device specific because you have other devices where it works”. As mentioned on discord it is not only my device where it simply does not work but heck yeah. I also wrote a ticket which only gave basic trouble shooting without improvement or solution.
I do have an alternate device to use maps but another player has not. If “there are bugs and issues” does mean “you can’t even use it on some devices” then yeah… expectations tempered, I guess.
My personal guess is, that maps does need certain amount of RAM/power to work and older devices like the iPad Pro 10,5 inch simply are too “weak” for it which results in the “Otto” synching problem. Which kinda is a bummer because other VTTs do work on it.

me too, I cant get any maps to load period, but my set up is FireDragon on linux, is it a browser thing?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I have made a huge homebrew setting that I am still working on putting here in DDB. Please give me feedback, I want to know all of what I am doing wrong, and what I am doing right. The thread is a huge work in progress, so everything in it from content to layout is subject to change. Please check this forum:Welcome to Zionderia
Also I have a fun thread that explores an idea about dreams based off the movie Inception. I still need to add the link but stay tuned.

I’ll give that a try for tomorrow.
EDIT: I wonder if it needs to be done at the players' end too.
I just used maps last night (3/22/24).
Here is my setup:
After playing for about 30 minutes the player on the iPad was the first to get the error message:

Maybe I'll try using my laptop as the DM map and spectator view. I can then use my iPad to connect to DnD Beyond and my other resources.
I have just DM a one shot using maps online. If you maintain the map open all the time, no problem works fine. But if you need to change tabs and MAPS is not the main focus... it crashes...

I can add a new version of this problem:

im also having the same issue, can i open a ticket or something?
test
You probably already did this, but in case you haven't, have you cleared your browser cache? Also, did you log out of DND Beyond and log back in?
yup tried both of those and it didnt fix my issue.
I've been having this issue for 2 weeks now. My fiance who is in the same campaign can can see the DM's maps just fine and we sit only feet apart from one another.

Bumping.

still an issue for me as well. please fix ASAP
2+ hours of being unavailable for us after working for around 2 hours. Seems like Sundays are always dicey.
C'mon WotC, make your stuff more reliable...
this sucks
