Hi, I recently started playing DnD again and began a campaign with some online friends who had mostly never played DnD before. I was so happy to see the Maps option added as it really helped to absorb the players and get them engaged without a lot of explaining and really helped speed things along. It worked great for a few weeks but now I'm getting so many problems.
I am constantly having to refresh the page to try and get a map to load in now. It will usually say 'Something went wrong!' and I will have to refresh at least 5 times before it even thinks about loading the map. Then when the map has loaded, if I try to add any tokens it will almost always crash and give me the message:
"Our steps got out of sync thanks to Otto's Irresistible Dance. Please refresh to help us save our Wisdom Saving Throw!
(We ran into an error while loading the map. If this continues to persist, please contact support.)"
After this the map will simply not load at all without giving this error and becomes, in effect, unusable. When this has happened while playing, I have to reupload the map, readd it to my campaign and then re-add all the tokens again while my players are just sitting and waiting, very frustrating! Things seem to work ok for a short time after this, but if I try to add any tokens after a few minutes then I get the same 'out of sync' message and again the map is unusable.
I really don't want to have to keep reuploading and readding maps then setting up all the tokens again over and over, especially when I've spent significant time setting everything up before hand. I wondered if I had too many maps added to the campaign (not that there's any limit mentioned anywhere) so I deleted a bunch but the issue is still happening. My players tell me they are having to keep refreshing the map on their end in order to get it to load, too.
Can anyone help? I know Maps is still in Alpha and there's going to be problems, but it worked so well for weeks and was such a great tool and I'd love it to work again.
Hi, thank you for your reply. I was using Firefox with extensions so I tried again using a completely vanilla Edge and had the same issue. However, your post got me thinking and I believe I've been able to trace the problems to some of my homebrew monsters that Maps didn't seem to like. Any time they were added it gave me the 'out of sync' message and I think it was also causing problems getting the monster list to load when I accessed the tokens menu. I've just deleted the monsters and will re add all my maps. Fingers crossed this fixes the issue!
I am experiencing the same thing. Regardless of the browser I use. I have tried Chrome and Edge. I have turned off all extensions and still I have issues with running the maps. If I refresh often enough it works for a while but eventually I need to refresh again.

Are you using homebrew monsters? I ask because Binbag McGraw has found evidence this is part of the issue.
I have homebrew monsters that I've made, but none of them are on the map. In fact, I can't even find them in the compendium when I search for them in the maps monster list.
My players and I were so excited to use the map during gameplay. Everything was fine until I tried adding my Homebrew Monsters which were actually just based completely on "Ghost" and I gave them NPC names. I didn't do anything to the stats or features.
I was using Chrome on a MacBook Pro.
One of my players struggled to get Maps to load and was using Safari on a Mac. When she switched to Chrome it worked.
I've also noticed that using the Game log in concert with the map is completely impossible. Any time I select the game log the window immediately crashed with the error, "Something went wrong."
I guess the bottom line is that the maps feature is still very much in Beta testing mode and has many quirks to work out before it becomes sustainable for game play.
I am having the same issue, no home brew monsters, but my own maps. I am the DM for a school group and this is so much easier for newbies than R20 so I want to love it, but if they can't see my maps, it won't work for us.
We were seeing the same problem last night. Just one technical glitch after another. We spent more time chasing after problems with D&D Beyond than we spent actually playing the game. Some fixes involved solutions as drastic as restarting the machine to get problems resolved. Our game ended early with an air of disgust. I understand that some of these tools are in Alpha and Beta, but the sheer number of problems feel like they could be overcome with more coding support. DNDBeyond has seemed like a basement project since Wizards of the Coast bought it.
Just writitng to keep this thread alive in case anyone finds solutions before it gets fixed on the server side of things.
Im still having all of these issues, cant load maps, errors, waiting for dm to select map for PS's, going out of sync. No homebrew, nothing crazy, ive tried everything and I actually feel like it's gettting worse. About 3 months ago you might have one issue loading for a few minutes, then it was fine. Now its gotten to the point where no one can load maps at all, or you have to refresh every 3-5 min..
I'm not having any issues loading maps, but during tonight's session (my first as an online session rather than in-person using the spectator view), my players frequently got a "the DM is not currently hosting a game" message, and they frequently had to refresh their windows to see that I'd moved a token or revealed part of the map. It was not a deal-breaker but it was annoying.
Something I tried yesterday, and I dont know for sure if it was me changing this setting, or a change on the server side of things. But, I went into chrome settings, and under the preformance tab I added dndbeyond.com to the list of sites that stay active and dont try to conserve memory if they arent active, and ill be dipped.. I went out of sync with my PC's a grand total of 0 times in 4 hours!

Do you use any extensions? A VPN?
what happens if you try a different browser?

Well, beta testing means its a work in progress. I'm sure they will work out all of the kinks before they release it to the full public.

This isn’t even BETA yet, it’s in ALPHA. The encounter builder is in BETA.
Different teams working on different projects. And Maps has only just gone into Alpha, the earliest stage of an MVP (minimum viable product)

One of my players cannot log on my maps. He uses a Chromebook and keeps getting "something went wrong".

I have experienced something similar using spectator mode to share on a TV.
The problem is that if DM Mode is not full time active, it "crashes and start to load", Crashing also the spectator view.
Thats a big issue with lots of minis on top of the table!

I already have done that, but maybe they have updated something
