A reminder that Maps is currently in ALPHA and this will mean there are bugs and issues. Please temper your expectations with that in mind
Yes, of course. The Problem for me and also some players at our table simply is that we can’t even use it on certain devices. I talked on discord (with you) about it and the only “help” was “seems to be device specific because you have other devices where it works”. As mentioned on discord it is not only my device where it simply does not work but heck yeah. I also wrote a ticket which only gave basic trouble shooting without improvement or solution.
I do have an alternate device to use maps but another player has not. If “there are bugs and issues” does mean “you can’t even use it on some devices” then yeah… expectations tempered, I guess.
My personal guess is, that maps does need certain amount of RAM/power to work and older devices like the iPad Pro 10,5 inch simply are too “weak” for it which results in the “Otto” synching problem. Which kinda is a bummer because other VTTs do work on it.
Definitely, I am wondering if I can't get it to work by trying another browser like Brave or other. Good to know though it is not just me.

I have made a huge homebrew setting that I am still working on putting here in DDB. Please give me feedback, I want to know all of what I am doing wrong, and what I am doing right. The thread is a huge work in progress, so everything in it from content to layout is subject to change. Please check this forum:Welcome to Zionderia
Also I have a fun thread that explores an idea about dreams based off the movie Inception. I still need to add the link but stay tuned.

My experience is that the browser does not matter. If the error shows up after having a grey map on loading, nothing will fix it. As written, my personal guess is, that some devices are just too “weak” to work with maps. But because there is no definitive “minimum system requirements” we can’t know for sure.
If people have older tablets, there is a good chance that maps simply does not work for them which really sucks.

Gotcha, yeah my laptop is older Dell. I would hope that it's not my devices power, but you very well could be correct. I just hope that updates might make it to where it works, or I find a simple solution to the problem.

Edit: Around 40 minutes after I made this post, everything went back to normal. Who knows what happened?
The saga continues:
A "lesser" version of the problem is now in effect on my desktop PC. Loading/changing battlemaps now takes ages. Sometimes it shows me the fog of war early but the map stays "grey" for a really long time. No "Otto's" error but it takes minutes or longer. Windows 10 with Chrome and enough power to run current games smoothly. The tab in chrome pulls like 200 MB Ram max (of 32 GB available) but still it does not load smoothly. A map that uses the 10 MB limit, it takes forever. Official maps from adventures load very slowly.
Fun fact: On my current gen iphone / ipad with safari or chrome the switches are instant and no delay. I can even use the "pointer" or "ping" tool on the gray map on the desktop PC and see it on the other devices. If I move the mouse over to a position where I know there are tokens, I can interact with them and for example change colors or rename them. But I don't see the actual map or the tokens.
This is the issue I have as well with Spectator mode for a digital table top. Have you figured out any fixes? As I have the players at the table sitting around the map and using physical minis, but does it help if a player at the table is also "in" the active session? Does that help at all or is it the same thing?
Can you explain "Maintain the map open all the time" meaning it just stays on that screen and don't switch to anything else, like notes or stats and that sort of thing?
Agreed. Same thing has been happening to me weekly now, for two separate groups, and for the past 3 weeks.
It sucks because the only reason I get stuff from the Marketplace is for the “ease” of just opening a map from the books. Now even that is not possible. Might just go back to Owlbear Rodeo for now.
Is this the Spectator View refresh issue? That screen keeps dying on the monitor. It's the whole reason I'm using Maps and now I'm wondering if I should just switch to Roll 20 or something.
Unfortunately, I think we have to wait till maps is in better condition and is compatible with other devices in effective and efficient ways. You might wanna use things like Roll 20 or Owlbear Rodeo until they fix a lot of bugs concerning devices not being able to open or load the maps. I have given up on Maps for the most part, but I keep my eye on it, checking the status to see if will finally load or not.

On the topic of mobile phones here is my experience.
On the laptop, I can select a basic map, or uploaded map to get started with. But then the laptop won't load the map so I can't use any of the map options because their is no loaded map to use them on. I can't place any tokens on a non loaded map.
When I switch to the phone, it loads the map I selected on the laptop, but there are no ping options or taken options for the map. I can only look at the map and there is nothing to do but look. My Samsung Galaxy 23 (I think that is what it is) has had multiple such problems displaying tabs or options that are normally available via laptop. For example, when make races in homebrew, you add modifiers right? No problem there, except for when I try to add a modifier to a races options! Or add anything to options for that matter.
Lots of errors and bugs via phone, and slow non loading screens on computer. I think D&D Beyond just has a little ways to go before it's extremely useful. (Specifically in homebrew and maps).
P.S, Encounters I have had relative success with, save I can't add players I have made to it, and sometimes I can't save or delete Encounters. Otherwise, great so far.
Okay I stop talking lol

Maps waited until Session 6 to give me this error.
Firefox : cleared cookies and cache, relogged in, no good. Chrome: Cleared cookies and cache, relogged in, no good. Same computer for the past 5 sessions. Nothing has changed from 5 to 6 (I should know, I forgot to session prep!)
Maps is in "BETA" Now, so Not sure what Mr. Alpha thought would be fixed...
It was working fine for me on all devices and two weeks ago it stopped working at all on any apple device. My wife has the newest iPad and it does not work, no matter which browser. My old android phone still works fine. So I doubt it’s the devices power which limits it… seems a problem related to apple? Maybe to ARM chipset…

Are you using windows 11 while facing the disconnect problem? In win10 it doesn't crash for hours. 2 win11 pcs crash constantly. What are you using?
