If it's being sold by WotC, it's official content. Some DMs may not allow content from specific official sourcebooks (such as Eberron: Rising from the Last War) because it doesn't suit their campaign, but if you've been told "only official content is allowed," then all books/supplements published by WotC should be fair game.
You say you're mostly doing research online, so I would probably recommend looking to see if the info you're looking at cites a specific book, and then you can Google the book to make sure it was published by WotC and not a third party.

I've had a heck of a time finding information within individual books. Is there an option I'm missing?

See the big search box at the top of every page? Enter your keywords and search, then click Compendium filter. It's not the best or clunky but works well enough for me.
Or just go to the book, go to the relevant chapter and then just Ctrl+F (browser find function).
