Character Creation: Origin Background

I have chosen 5.5e Core Rules but only the following 4 backgrounds are shown:

Acolyte, Criminal, Sage, Soldier

How do I find the other 12 backgrounds? Do I need to create them as custom backgrounds, if so, how do I do that?

Do you own the Players Handbook on D&D Beyond, or are you creating a character in a campaign that someone has shared that content with you?

Those 4 are the free ones from the Basic Rules/SRD.

Oh, ok. I do own the book but I bought it on Amazon. I guess there is now way to get the other backgrounds without paying extra to DND Beyond then?

The other way would be to join a campaign where someone is sharing it.

The digital D&D Beyond version and the physical version are different products and owning one doesn't automatically give you access to the other.

You can recreate them for free for personal use (dont share them publicly) using the background creator homebrew tool.

I own the physical copy and bought the digital one so I could have all the backgrounds, but it is not showing up in my library or all the backgrounds when I create a character. What am I  missing besides the $32?

Sometimes it can take a while for a new purchase to show up in the character builder. It does eventually sync up on its own, but if you want to hurry it along you can go to the Account Settings screen and click on the "Licenses" tab (here). If it's out of sync, there will be a button there to sync it.
