So I am trying to make some homebrew species that have subspecies. The only issue is I can't select the parent species as the species group even though I have check mark the box for it to have subspecies. Can some please give me guidance to fix this because I am pulling my hair out over here on this.
(As a side note, subspecies in general are a fairly outdated concept in the rules. Modern species include those as a choice within the species itself instead, which would also bypass that grouping issue entirely.)

Sub-species were absolutely a valid concept in the earlier dndbeyond and my players created several sub-species of Aarakocra and Lizardfolk using real-world examples such as the Owlakocra and Komodo Dragon Lizardfolk which work excellently as sub-species. We added these to our private campaign as sub-species of the core species with no issues in the earlier iteration of dndbeyond but this feature has been badly nerfed by the devs (possibly to push everyone into THEIR concept of how the game should be played and purchase all new rulebooks AGAIN, both in paper and digital formats).
If only there was an offline, database version of dndbeyond (not for sale of course as that would probably break laws) where rules options of this amazing game were selectable by us, the players (& DMs). Alas, there isn't so back to paper play. Maybe better ;-)
