So I wanted to try to make a Human Kensei Monk with a feat in Firearm Specialist to try and make a Gun-Fu specialist... However, I can't seem to make any kind of gun a kensei weapon... Help?
Guns are a group on there own in they all under "firearms" they neither "simple" or "martial" weapon so your kensei monk don't have acces on it in dnd beyond.
So I wanted to try to make a Human Kensei Monk with a feat in Firearm Specialist to try and make a Gun-Fu specialist. So I created a human and added the feat. Go to classes and add Kensei Monk... But under Kensei weapon, there are no guns... Can you assist?
I had seen a post like this just this morning (Monk sub-forum).
The problem is that guns are under the Firearm weapon group, there fore they are neither simple nor martial. This makes them not available to be selected for the Kensei features.

Hmm din't know there was DMG firearms i only though there was critical role especially with the feat that from critical role. IDK how they implemented the firearms but when searching pistol the type is "firearms ranged weapons" that where my respond came from. I suspect that tag used to determine if "Firearm Specialist" give you proficiency on the weapons and at the same time on dnd beyond they considered firearms instead of martial making them not appear for kensei.
The whole of the Dungeon Master's Workshop chapter of the DMG is optional rules that DMs can add to their game and a discussion on how to do so.
I'm not saying that firearms shouldn't be possible for a Kensei, but I expect that they are not available as standard because firearms are an optional rule.
Badeye has said previously that it is intended to fully support all optional rules eventually.
so i think technically this is possible. as an second level artificer, you can get an infusion called repeating shot. the restriction for the kind of item you can use this infusion with is "A simple or martial weapon with the ammunition property". fun fact, none of the Critical role options appear here, as they are not classified ar martial or simple, as stated previously on this thread. but also pointed out on this thread are the DMG optional rules firearms, which, can actually be found on the list of applicable items when choosing which item to infuse this to on you character sheet, meaning that these particular firearms are martial or simple weapons.
choosing the right one, (mainly one that doesn't have the heavy or special property) you could theoretically have a gun as a kensei weapon. its not available on the kensei list, but as pointed out by the moderator, thats simply because these options are optional rules, which may hopefully one day be included. ergo, you can as stated by the rules, have a gun wielding monk. still ask your dm for permission of course. im looking at the stats for this, and its outlandishly powerful and might ruin the adventure for yourself and others. maybe just use a crossbow instead?

"Each of these weapons can be any simple or martial weapon that lacks the heavy and special properties"
Firearms are not simple or martial, they are their own category of "Firearms Ranged Weapon". They wouldn't be a valid choice for Kensei by RAW.
I don't want to sound like a doubter or an ******* but on the compendium rules for firearms states that they are Martial Ranged Weapons.

DMG firearms are what he’s talking about. In the DMG they’re listed as martial ranged weapons.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Pretty much what BoboBoombang said.
This conversation was taking place in two threads simultaneously, so I have merged them.

Sorry, I had originally posted this in Monk, but when I tweeted the problem to DnDBeyond, they said to post it in the Help Forum...
My bad

If a firearm can be a dedicated weapon, how can't it be a kensei weapon?
This is pretty much what I am talking about...
Its 2021 can we get this updated? :(
