According to the Player's Handbook if a Monk wears a shield or armor they no longer qualify for Unarmored movement but it doesnt take it away if a player equips a shield.
So I was curious if you can benefit from unarmed movement while wearing a shield. I have a player in one of my games that is wielding a shield as an way of the open hand monk. D&Dbeyond did not take away his unarmed movement bonus while wearing the shield so he claimed that it doesnt take it away because it didnt do it automatically. If this is not correct, then it is a glitch that needs to be changed because he is extremely adamant that D&D Beyond would take it away.
D&D Beyond is not perfect. This is a bug (or more accurately a missing feature) of the character sheet.
Monks are not proficient with shields. Unless he is gaining shield proficiency from somewhere else, he has the following penalties:
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
Furthermore, several monk features can only be used while not wearing armor or a shield. They are: unarmored defense, martial arts, and unarmored movement.
The rulebook, both physical and on D&D Beyond, states for the Unarmored movement feature:
Starting at 2nd level, your speed increases by 10 feet while you are not wearing armor or wielding a shield.
As DxJx says, unfortunately at this time, the D&D Beyond character sheet doesn't have the ability to disable the feature based upon equipping armor/shield.

The rules are still very clear however.
Thank you so much, for your time. Both of you. It just came up because D&D Beyond removes the feature when equipping armor but not Shields. Hopefully we will get this feature in the future. I will relay the information to my players. Once again, thank you so much for your swift response.
Has this been fixed yet? My monk's speed is reduced when equipping armour but not a shield, and I can't tell if it's something I'm overlooking on my end or if it's a bug with shields not working while armour does?
