Just as it says; I've tried to purchase a year-long subscription, but the prepaid card keeps getting rejected.
1) It's not just one card, I've tried two prepaid cards, each with sufficient funds, and neither are working here, despite working on other sites.
2) Yes, I've double-checked the card info and tried multiple times. Nothing.
3) I've tried buying shorter-length subscriptions as well; same thing.
I suspect the problem is the whole "making charges as recurring transactions" thing, as I've had problems with that little "feature" on one other site too.
I was sharing content, and I'm desperate to get my players back up and running. Is there any way to get my payment processed NOT as a recurring transaction? Or do you sell "gift codes" that I can then immediately apply to my account?
Barring either of those, do you allow for other (non-PayPal) payment methods, either old school (like mailing in a money order) or new and hip (like Bitcoin?)
So... got feedback from DDB's support team. They've informed me that the site simply does not technically permit prepaid cards. Even though they used to. I'm just SOL. Which means, I guess, that technically this is resolved.
That said, I want to publicly express both disappointment and frustration with this outcome.
Like many people, I use prepaid cards nearly everywhere online. Often this is on sites that are for subscription services (read: recurring charges,) and it is extremely rare that I have consistent problems with prepaid cards on such sites (the only other one I can think of is one that just has horrible customer service in the first place--which is telling.) I don't see any reason why D&D Beyond can't setup things so that prepaid cards work. All the big sites (Amazon, Google, Apple, etc.) can pull it off. All the small sites I visit, selling handmade silver products, or reports, or foodstuffs, or just about anything else can pull it off. In light of that, that D&D Beyond is comfortable with just accepting "well, we just can't take prepaid cards," is more than a little disappointing.
First off, I'm trying to buy a year-long subscription of the highest-tier service. I'd literally be prepaying for 12 months of service. Why is it necessary to make the charge for that a recurring charge in the first place? ALL subscriptions MUST use recurring payment transactions? Really?
On top of that, the fact that the site only accepts either Paypal or a (non-prepaid) credit/debit card in the first place almost seems lazy. I get it, development went with the easy payment options first to get the site up and running, and making changes takes time and IT is stretched thin, etc. Plus, hey, those two methods allow quick set-it-and-forget-it recurring transactions! But it's 2020, and this is HOW PEOPLE HAND YOU THEIR MONEY. That the options still remain only these two is a bit unreasonable.
The upshot of all this is, one of my players is going to allow me to use their bank debit card to buy a subscription. Which is just a tacky, terrible workaround, but they're desperate enough for shared content to do it. I'll only make monthly subscription purchases, just so I can keep checking to see if this limitation has been removed, and eventually free his card from my account.
I'd like to think that D&D Beyond would try to do better with this.
If you can use PayPal you can link prepaid cards to it to transfer funds into a PayPal account. You can then use the PayPal account to buy things here. This is actually more secure than using the prepaid card directly.
And subscriptions will always be a recurring charge because that's what makes them subscription. You can always cancel it before the renewal and won't lose any time from the current sub - it just won't renew at the end. Most people like auto-renewing subs, saves having to re-sub. If finances take an odd turn and you need to delay things, then just cancel it. Seems simple enough.

I *just* signed up for Consumer Reports. It's $39/year--a recurring fee.
I used the exact same prepaid debit card that didn't work at D&D Beyond.
If practically every other company online can accept prepaid cards, and can still make regular, pre-scheduled charges without prompting the customer, I see no valid reason why DDB can't.
It's been about 10 months since this issue presented itself. I wound up purchasing an annual subscription (unfortunately using a friend's card,) so I still have a couple months until renewal, but I figured I'd go ahead and get a jump on this.
I'm bumping this to ask both the general audience and DDB themselves:
Has anyone else tried pre-paid credit or debit cards on the site recently?
Does anyone know if DDB still refuses to accept such?
Debit cards work fine and always have - it's what I have used for most of the time here before switching to Paypal more recently.

Just tried, but with Xanathar's Guide. Didn't work at all. Even one-time payments fail. It is really disappointing, and to jump through multiple hoops to do so is annoying. Hope this gets fixed.

I can buy books and book elements with non-reloadable prepaid debit cards (in fact, I did so a week or two ago, using a Visa card.) If you're having trouble with that, you might want to contact DDB; they might be able to provide assistance.
But... still no word one way or another on subscription purchases.
Fixing THAT would be nice, but DDB seems ridiculously obstinate as far as to even looking into it. There's literally zero legitimate reason they can't do this, when 99% of all websites that take credit cards on the web do. But they don't even seem to think it worth their while to come up with an excuse as to why they don't. Just, "we don't do that, sorry."
I'm NOT using a friend's bank card next year. Two years is enough... they want to keep my hero master tier money coming, they need to at least act like they care.
Just as some businesses refuse to take any kind of cards, some businesses can be more specific and refuse to take certain types of cards. Some businesses refuse checks since they do not want to deal with the hassle of bounced checks. And with the pandemic and coin shortage going on, some brick-and-mortar businesses outright refuse cash payments unless you have exact change, both to limit contact and preserve change at the same time. Businesses are not obligated to take all kinds of payment methods, and they have the right to force transactions to be made in a certain way.
As far as I know, the two reasons I can think of off the top of my head for refusing certain types of payments are cost and convenience. I am not too familiar with prepaid cards, but it might be possible that businesses have to pay more to the card company if the customer uses prepaid card, so it might not be worth it to cater to customers using prepaid cards, especially if that customer base is not particularly large to begin with. Another reason is convenience; if a business keeps having issue with prepaid cards, then they could just flatout refuse them to avoid the hassle of sorting things out.

Obviously.

Apparently these two reasons are ones that 99% of companies that do business via the internet have no trouble with. Seriously, to take cards at all, but to then explicitly forbid prepaid cards is practically unheard of, and smacks more of a coding error or banking oversight they refuse to spend time tracking down than some explicit corporate policy.
I've made purchases at dozens, maybe even hundreds of different online sites over the last several years alone, from tiny one-man shops to Google and Amazon, and ALL of them that took cards took prepaid, with the sole exception of one other company with absolutely abysmal customer service (and even then, I'd bet money that if I tried now, in late 2021, even they would take them.)
And again, it's not JUST that they don't take the cards. Their entire dismissive attitude to the situation simply makes the sting that much worse.
@ DDB: I repeat, I will NOT be borrowing anyone else's bank card or actual credit card to pay for your service this year; to have to do so just for one company is absurd. This has been an issue for multiple years now, and clearly there's not even a desire to fix it, so I guess that's just the end of my master tier subscription.
I cancelled my current Master subscription, with a few days still to go on it. I then attempted to use a prepaid debit card to make an annual purchase of a new Master-tier subscription. At first, the order "couldn't be processed at this time." Ever-hopeful, I decided to try again a few more times. Lo and behold, the second time... THE PURCHASE WENT THROUGH!
I'm still kind of in shock, and wondering if this wasn't some sort of error that will be corrected later, or a purchase that won't actually go through (since the card activity isn't actually showing the transaction yet,) but my subscription is showing as active, and I'll definitely keep my eyes on this and report back what ultimately happens.
(I remain hopeful, but considering recent posts to this thread, it will be disappointing, but not surprising, to find the order cancelled tomorrow.)
Again, no surprise... the order didn't go through. Tried again, and once more the shopping cart accepted the order, and the system showed I had an active subscription; but a few hours later, and it was cancelled once again.
So, that's that.
Full disclosure: I eventually made the purchase by using the card via Paypal, and that has actually worked (with the transaction actually showing up on the card's activity,) but I honestly hadn't planned on that even as a last resort: I don't normally use Paypal, don't WANT to use Paypal, and had issues with my account from years ago--but apparently they're no longer a thing (no way was I going to create a new account.)
For those who are facing this debit card issue and can't or won't use Paypal either, my sympathies... DDB clearly is bound and determined to stick to this bizarre decision of theirs.
Update. Tried again with slightly higher balance and it worked!
$14.99 sub for Hero tier took $16.21 to go through.
Misleading thing was the error I got prior to this was "payment method failed" or something similar rather than telling me there was insufficient balance due to tax and whatever fee was added
