I'm new to using the site and was creating a new character (barbarian), jumped to level 3 to select my totem path annnnnd...the only I option i had was path of the berserker. I clicked the link directing me to the marketplace and subscribed to the site in the hopes that it would unlock the additional options but still nothing more than the single path option.
Am I to understand that in order to unlock all the available character creation options for the site, I have to purchase digital copies of the PHB, Xanthar's etc??? I have physical copies of the books and I'm not about to buy digital copies just in order to use the content from this single site. In fact I'm not sure why anyone would do so...makes d&d beyond seem like a money grab instead of a community resource.
I hope I'm wrong and if anyone can direct me to a solution that doesn't include spending a bunch of money I've already spent it'd be appreciated.
A subscription does not unlock content and doesn't claim to. It's main use is to enable content sharing.
Yes you have to buy the non-free character options to use the non-free character options. DDB is not part of WotC, they are a separate distributor, same as where you bought your physical books. They make money by selling access to content, they can't just give it away for free because you gave your money to their competitor.
You can just buy the options you need individually for a smaller price, have the options shared to you by someone who has made purchases, or use the homebrew tools to make options from the books (just don't publish them).
