In many of the official campaigns there are optional backgrounds in the appendices but I don't see a way to use them in the character builder. I've had a quick look and it doesn't appear possible to even homebrew these as a workaround.
Am I missing something or is this an oversight by the D&D Beyond crew?
The staff team are working on the character builder and character sheet currently and, as part of that, there will be an overhaul of the background system.
Ultimately, you'll have full flexibility on backgrounds and the ability to create your own.
