Quick spoiler for Tomb of Annihilation, so you can look away here.
If you are possessed by the spirit of Obo'laka you gain an attunement slot. I don't see anyway to do this mechanically in the game. Currently this isn't an issue for me as I can pretend I'm attuned to one of my Items as it doesn't affect my stats. However if you wanted to attune a 4th item that affected stats I don't see a good way to do it. I'd probably create a homebrew item and combine two of the times like belt of giant strength and a ring of protection just to make it work.
Since this is something that is by RAW in a campaign, it would be good to have a way to do it mechanically. Probably the easiest way would be with an item, adding "Attunement Slots" to the "Bonus" sub-menu.
Since someone else Bumped this, I'll mention the revamp has come and gone and things like Adding attunement slots and feats in addition to normal progression still not readily available.
Hopefully the Artificer feature Superior Attunement made it into the revised Artificer, in which case DDB will add the functionality increase Attunement slots to accommodate the feature, and if they are smart about it, they'll make the effect a modifier that can be applied to Feats, Items and etc.
While 6 is still pretty cool, why put a cap on it at all?
Probably to keep in line with "not adding something that isn't 'official'", and since the Artificer is "official" content, that must mean that WoTC have determined there to be a hard cap at six. Since the game is a game of exceptions, and the rules states that "An item can be attuned to only one creature at a time, and a creature can be attuned to no more than three magic items at a time" and the Artificer makes an exception to this, that must be the rules. So unless WoTC releases another class or an errata that says that a creature can normally only be attuned to 3 magic items, certain features have the capacity of increasing that limit indefinitely, I think we are stuck at 6.
How do you create an extra attunement feat, I can’t seem to get it to work ??
When creating a feat, add a modifier like this: Set -> Attunement Slots: 6 (or whatever number of attunement slots you want the character to have). I don't think there is a way to "Add" attunement slots, like say: "You can attune to one more item than normal." Instead you have to use the set version, and probably phrase it in the feat: "You can attune to 4 magical items instead of the normal 3."
So was there ever a actual solution to this or just a noted work around?
The solution is literally in the comment right above yours. To create a fourth Attunement slot, you will need to create a custom Feat for it in Homebrew. You can have up to six Attunement slots. If you need more, the workaround would be to copy whatever items you need via Homebrew and remove their Attunement property.

I think this can safely be expected to be part of the upcoming character sheet revamp.

This. This should be added as an option.
Also one of your players could use a wish spell to have more attunement slots. It would be nice to have the option to do something like that.

Feats can be added outside of normal progression - you can add them through the character sheet.
Click on Features & Traits in the main area of the sheet, then on Feats and you'll a link for "Manage Feats"

Any word on this?

Any update to this?
Yup, a modifier was added to allow additional attunement slots to be added.
You can create a feat for this yourself as homebrew, using the modifier SET -> ATTUNEMENT SLOTS.

It is capped at 6 however, much like the Artificer capstone.

Thanks!
They had the ability to attune more manually by clicking the item and clicking attune, they removed that
This may seem picky, but that was a bug rather than intended functionality. The bug was fixed.
