As the DM of my current campaign, I want to buy the digital copies of the books my players are using so we can use D&D Beyond. Problem is, one of my players is using a legacy aasimar. I don’t have Volo’s guide digitally. The inability to buy legacy content also hurts my game’s policy: play any version of race you like. We should be able to buy legacy content. I don’t see why we shouldn’t.
Legacy 5e races are relatively "not hard" builds in Homebrew, and the homebrew community here I'm sure would be more than willing to help you get started. Legacy content is no longer "officially" part of the WotC 5e line, that's why it's not available for purchase. It wasn't an overwhelmingly popular move, but I think it sets precedent for what D&D Beyond may look like as it transitions from 5e to WOTC Projekt D&D 2024 GOLD or whatever One D&D will be called. You'll see 5e material phased over to legacy as the new core comes online. MMM was supposed to be a "look at the future of D&D" and I think that might include an illustration of product management/maintenance. As someone who actually does own Volo's, I'm happy my actual purchase is maintained this way. But I haven't bought a D&D Beyond edition in some time, some I have a number of homebrews from the most recent books, and WotC official content isn't a hard lift after a little trial and error.

Thats not really a reason. More "this is just what's happening now" We as customers should* have the option to buy the books we want even if they arent officially the rules now.
That's just an announcement saying "we're gonna stop people buying our old books, and we'll do it again"
This isn't an online game with a big multiplayer element that requires everyone having the same patches. The only balance that exists is what's balanced for your table. If I wanna use Volo's instead of Modernkainen's, and I haven't bought it yet, I should have that option.
Volo's is full of lore and random tables for things like "what a Beholder looks like" that simply don't exist in Mordenkainen's.
That should continue to be available to people, especially when in most cases the only thing that changed is that monsters don't use spell slots anymore.
WotC is now just in it for the money grab. There were so many things that could have made great gaming as well as good money for them but they got greedy. It's not even capitalism. Far from it, since WotC doesn't give a crap about the essence of the game anymore. To them, it's all about control. Hitler would be proud.
I am very disappointed in WotC. MMM doesn't include ANY options for tieflings, effectively meaning that there is no way to get access to the tiefling bloodline options anymore, and they hardcore botched the variant tiefling stuff in SCAG so it's a net negative to even think about using it. SCAG screwed up the tiefling ASI so now it's feral or nothing, and from what I've seen on the forums the variant options are bugged because they didn't bother to include any of the standard coding stuff they do for official races.
Random homebrew is better than this.

Forever DM here. Seeking to make a decent campaign out of nothing.
This is why WOTC has been doing so bad financially, They actually stop customers from buying digital products we want, I totally understand adding the legacy content badge so we don't buy something by accident that is now considered legacy but if I want to buy Legacy content I should be able to, I already own the books I want to buy digitally already, so I can just manually add it via homebew but I don't want to waste my time and would rather just buy it, and then when the newer version comes out buy that digitally. It would only be to their own benefit. But their short sightedness stops customers from giving them money and pushes customers to instead spend money with their competitors.
