I'm a DM in 2 campaigns and a player in a 3rd. Everyone is done with WOTC and won't support them after this debacle.
Edit to add: Also cancelled subs on Youtube for the D&D Beyond and official Dungeons and Dragons channels.

To me, the damage has been done. No amount of gaslighting or backpedaling will be forgiven. WOTC/hasbro tried to get away with some diabolical move and got called out for it.
I will continue to play D&D 5E, but I will never purchase anything from WOTC or Hasbro ever again. I will not be renewing my Master Tier subscription (on my 3rd year, there won't be a fourth) and have already saved my Legendary Bundle to pdf files for print and binding at home. One D&D is dead in the water, not even going to taken under consideration.
WOTC: Y'all f*cked up and lost me as a customer for life, and I've been playing D&D since it was still owned by TSR.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Project Black Flag and the other game systems that are bound to spring up due to the mass exodus of 3rd party publishers.
Wizards needs to back-pedal fast and decide to just stick with the previous OGL and figure it out from there.
And the response they gave us: "you’re going to hear people say that they won, and we lost because making your voices heard forced us to change our plans. Those people will only be half right. They won—and so did we."
Whoever the pretentious individual is that decided to include this really needs to go back to school to learn a thing or 2 about PR. We (the obstacles to their money) haven't won until they back down from this OGL nonsense completely, and at this point, until the executive team at Wizards has stepped down.
Bought a few DnD books back in the late 90's, but the rules were a bit too complicated for me and my mates back then. Tried again during third ed. Still not really our thing and we kept playing other systems.
Then I stumbled across the Adventure Zone podcast a couple of years ago. (That was awesome!) Saw the Dragon of Icespire peak box in a book fair (Looks awesome, I'll buy that!) Started an DnDbeyond Account the same weekend and subscribed almost at once.
And now I'm out. Just cancelled my subscription with a heavy heart.
I don't have a subscription, and right now I'm very glad I didn't use my Christmas money to buy a subscription. It would have been a waste of money. My whole group is talking about what system we'll hop into once we wrap up our current campaign, and I don't think there's anything WOTC can say to make them reconsider.
Agree with OP and like many here I've been playing D&D since 1st ed. What player or DM in their right mind would make this change to the OGL? None that I'm aware of. This smacks of corporate greed coming from non players who have now demonstrated a complete disregard for the community, the game, and its history.
Change the OGL and I'm out, as are many of my fellow DM's and players. Not only that, but you will have created a solid apologist against both WOTC and your products and services.
Just canceled my subscription. The recent releases by wotc have been pretty sparse in meaningful content and the ogl has reinforced my dissatisfaction. My trust is gone and they are going to have to do something major if they want me to buy back in.
I know at least 2 players who have canceled their subscriptions, and I am on the fence.
I know WoTC has made moves to correct its initial stance on the future of the OGL, but I am concerned. It is not about the desire for change but the organizational structure of the decision-making process. Who was in the room? And where are the community advocates?
This IP has so much monetary potential; I understand Hasbro and WoTC want a bigger slice/more protections, but they seem to lack meaningful innovation and transparency.
I hope WoTC is making an earnest course correction, but I will withhold judgment until further notice.
- Either way, I have >25 years of fond memories, and I will always be thankful for the chance to be a part of such an incredible community, even if I am pushed out of this one.
Not that it buys me any credibility - 1st edition purple box for Christmas 1984 was my introduction with the expert set shortly thereafter. I fought Tiamat in the first level of Hell and went on to fight Asmodeous in the ninth level at the tender age of 11 to raise my beloved Grey Wolf from the grave - true story. Very nostalgic about this old system of playing, but that is what it is, just a system to give groundrules to allow other 11 year olds (and *cough* 48 year olds) to create cool stories together that can literally be fond memories for decades (yes, Grey Wolf did rise from the dead after the archdevil was defeated!).
Master tier also cancelled and I am astounded about how incredibly efficient WOTC has been at giving away at least some of the market share here to their competitors. Its like giving Paizo the best new years present possible - no matter what, other systems get the chance at a share of the market courtesy of a terrible idea and transparently false follow-up. Jesus, you can't make this one up.
I cancelled my master tier subscription and am currently learning Pathfinder 2e. Honestly seems incredibly fun. It's a little intimidating at first, until you realize the girth of their books comes from the sheer amount lore Paizo packs in there, not necessarily from a book full of mechanics.
I've asked myself many times, "Why am I so upset about this OGL thing...after all, it's only a game." That's when the words from John Wick come to mind, "...it's only a f**king dog." But Wick's puppy was far more than just a dog; it was the symbolic connection to his wife--that's what was taken from him.
For me this whole OGL debacle is just a microcosm symbolizing my pent up frustration towards greedy corporations, big pharma, mainstream media, and totalitarian like governments. Being told to stay at home, locked up for 2 years. Told to wear a mask. Told to pay $5 a gallon gas. Mandated to take a vaccine or else lose my job.
So when this WotC OGL thing hit, I was like, "Oh hell no, you can't take away my creativity now, and my leisure time with my friends. You can't get inside my living room and inside my mind and threaten my imagination."
What power do I have against all of those huge corporations that run my life? Not much to be honest. But WotC is just small enough for my little involvement to make a difference. I CAN unplug from Dungeons and Dragons...forever! And there is something so satisfying about all of us gamers joining together to show a greedy corporation that it is them who needs us and not the other way around, after all, "It's just a f**king dog!"
I've also cancelled my Master Tier sub, have been subscribed for years. It made me *really* sad to do so. I won't stop playing 5e, because every time I even *look* at Pathfinder the community seems a bit too toxic and the rules are overly complicated. But yeah, I'm just going to be sad that the D&D 5e community is probably irrevocably (see what I did there?) damaged by this whole debacle.
The amount of D&D content I've purchased, while not "staggering", is certainly a lot: every 5e release, including duplicates for some of the alternate covers like the core rules, rules expansion, and the special deluxe edition of Shadow of the Dragon Queen, gameplay assistants (monster and spell cards), officially licensed monsters from Wizkids and Gale Force Nine (I want a Beholder, dammit, not "floaty eye monster"), and even the D&D paint sets through Army Painter. *ALL* of that money WotC/Hasbro got *because* of Critical Role and Dimension 20. If it weren't for those shows reigniting my desire to paint, and showing me how "easy" it is to DM when I hadn't before, I wouldn't have purchased anything from WotC at all.
Hasbro, you've messed up *big*. Make the OGL 1.0a "irrevocable" and call it 1.0b, or better yet, sign on to the ORC. That's about the *only* way to start the long road towards regaining community trust: signing something that says it's not *possible* for you to go back on your word.
Pathfinder isn't for everyone but there are a multitude of tabletop alternatives if you wish to try them. Of course, if you want to stay with D&D I understand, but I'd advice against DNDOne if nothing else. What we need from Wizards, if they are intent on not licensing their upcoming DND through the original OGL, is a public acknowledgement that they can't revoke the OGL in terms of what they've already released through it. THAT is our requirement at this point. That's not a promise we'll return as customers. That's merely a statement of expectation.
Subscription cancelled. The campaign I play with my friends is switching over to PF2. I have another campaign I run with 9 high school students at the school I teach in. We're going to stick that one out until the end of the campaign because it will be tough for them all to learn a new system. But after this one ends all of the next campaigns I run at my school will use something other than a WOTC product. Not only have you lost me and my current players, but all the future players I will bring into the hobby for the next 20 years. When students ask why we aren't playing DnD I will be more than happy to explain it to them.
Wizards, I am surprised (probably shouldn't be), and disappointed. This latest maneuver is just horrid. You're making the last days of TSR look like a competently run company. I really feel bad for the people in your company that care about the game, and I know there are many.
I have tens of thousands of dollars worth of D&D material dating back to the early 80's. And spend over a thousand dollars on it per year. That just ended.
I've started the following hashtags on Twitter to get Cynthia Williams, the Hasbro VP who is effectively the CEO of WotC, FIRED ASAP. #hellnotothisCEO #newCEOnow #firecynthianow #cynthiawilliams

After more than 5 years, my sub ended today, thank the gods for timing! Won’t be resubbing. Ya blew it, WotC/Hasbro #OpenDnd #DndBegone
4.5 years and I ended my subscription. It was supposed to be a hard click but WOTC and Hasbro made it easy.
Just canceled my subscription. The recent releases by wotc have been pretty sparse in meaningful content and the ogl has reinforced my dissatisfaction. My trust is gone and they are going to have to do something major if they want me to buy back in.

Good on ya, not sure what to move to, PE2 or some completely different things.
