2. my biggest game that's been going for nearly a year now (the 12 player one) is taking a break to consider switching to another system, specifically pathfinder 2. Look at yourself wotc you're pushing new and old players alike from your system for greed. Only 3 of the 13 of us are vet players. We had Ten Newbies people who never played a lick of dnd or any other tabletop game in their lives and you've lost every single one of them.
3. None of my games are continuing forward with dndbeyond at minimum.
It's really shameful. But on the plus side one of my main DMs is considering building her own system too.

I just canceled my subscription today as well. After reading the condescending update from Wizards I just couldn't take it anymore. What kind of an apology was that?
My players will all be sad we wont be using D&D beyond. And my wallet is a bit sad since I own every book on D&D beyond, but reading that apology was the last straw for me.
Looks like my players are going to get a bunch of indie TTRPGs to play for a while.

(1) Our job is to be good stewards of the game: Wrong. We are the stewards of the game. You print books.
(2) the OGL exists for the benefit of the fans: Wrong. The OGL exists to benefit Wizards. 3rd party Creators have made your game what it is today.
With the most recent post on the Articles section, I have made the sad move to cancel my subscription until the original OGL is reinstated and protected from future attempts to change it.
It really sucks; I want to support this site and its staff so that the tools here can be made even better. I hate to take away from that functionality, but something had to give.

I have already canceled my subscription in response to the OGL update disaster as well. As long as you try to claim that OGL 1.0a can simply be "unauthorized" I'm out of here. Releasing OneDND under a new licence is fine with me, but trying to take away old 5e content that has already been released under OGL 1.0a from creators so that suddenly no one can release new content with the old ruleset under that licence anymore is unacceptable.
In the end all the OGL 1.0a is, is a way to give creators security for rules that were in the legal gray area anyway. Game rules cannot be copyrighted, but artworks and lore can. D&D rules are a mixture of both and drawing the boundary is hard and messy. What the OGL did was take away the risk of lawsuits by drawing a clear boundary. You're basically voluntarily agreeing to a boundary, even if the boundary defined by a court would have been a bit differeng one way or the other. Even if OGL 1.0a had never existed, people would still have been able to create D&D 5e compatible material. But in the worst case that would have meant going to court to define where that border lies first. The thing is it's much more likely that people simply would not have done this but instead abandoned D&D, since other more open but ultimately equivalent rulesets would have arisen. And obviously the ruleset that most people use and create content for is the one that will dominate in the long term. And since it's much easier and safer to do so with an open license that only locks down clearly defined lore, artwork and the like but not the ruleset and central game mechanics itself, no TTRPG without an open license will ever be able to compete on the same level.
Ultimately that's what Hasbro does not understand - in a field that thrives on market externalities you can't just grow your empire on an open licence but maintain it without one.
Honestly the only feasible way I see for them to fix this mess is to make the upcoming ORC licence a valid option for games previously released under OGL 1.0a. Sometimes you need to relinquish some control to ultimately maintain dominance and protect yourself in the long term. Think about it WotC. Your future depends on it....
I'm out. You reap what you sow. You not only betrayed the community, you also thought you could straight up BS us. I've got news for you WotC, we are an army of NERDS. We are neither stupid, nor gullible enough to believe ANYTHING you have to say at this point. Especially after the post yesterday which was childish and utterly condescending.
As a DM I not only had a higher tier subscription so we could share books digitally, but I have bought almost every book in physical copy as well. Not only have I cancelled the subscription, I have begun to research other ttrpgs that suit our play style and needs. This isn't a conditional "if you fix it I'll be back" statement, no this blatant disrespect has pulled the wool of nostalgia from my eyes.
Hi while I know I am far from a valued customer I just came here to say am removing my subscription to this service due to OGL 1.1
I will also be recommending to my group and all those at the clubs I attend to do the same. We are meeting tomorrow to discuss which system we will be moving to.
Your greed has caused you to lose sight of what made D&D great IE the community. I can only hope your company sinks like a stone and D&D gets bought for a song by someone who will be better custodians. Remember you did not create D&D, your company is well know for being parasitic and now everyone knows.
Next time your crtossing the road don't bother looking.
I am discontinuing my 5 year sub and let my digital content (I own every and any thing you can own on dndbeyond) languish while I find a different system. Been playing since 1985 when I was in 5th grade. Bye.
Dnd Beyond you were a great resource. OGL stays put or I don’t buy another Dnd Beyond product. I’ll switch to another system. I hope this is a warning to any other successful company under the existing OGL that wotc is never, ever to be trusted.
I'm done, but let it be known that WOTC never had any right to stop us from making our own content based on their rules in the first place. While their public statement that their new license won't affect content already released is accepted, this shall not be construed to imply an acceptance that they had any right to stop us in the first place, nor is it an acceptance of any unenumerated rights being given to WOTC over the same.
I also encourage everyone to cancel their subscription but also to remember that no matter what pressure we put on them, WotC and Hasbro will always try something like this again to get the money they think we owe them for playing their make-believe game. I've been a strong supporter of D&D since the days of TSR, and I have defended using 5e as the core system for almost every game I've played in the past 6 years. (even if I had to homebrew it a bit) I've bought almost every hardcover book and sourcebook here. I've bought branded minis, spell cards, a couple of B&G premium editions, video games, and more WizKids junk than I'd care to admit. At first I thought that we should pressure them to restore the old OGL so we could keep the magic going, but now I realize that without the the OGL, WotC is just another TTRPG publisher among many others. Most of those others, by the way, have way more respect and trust in the TTRPG community than WotC and have been far better to their employees and the community with their products. And its not like D&D has the best ruleset or the best intellectual properties, it's just been the most accessible. If D&D is just a brand to these people, then let's let them have it; drenched in burning feces and having been pummeled by rotting vegetables. We can do better. We could always do better, but we never needed to. Until now.
This says it all. Never had a subscription, but bought hundreds of dollars' worth of books. However, I'm not giving another cent to WotC ─ not just for D&D, but for MTG too ─ until further notice.
And unless I need to further advocate about this, I'm not using D&D Beyond again ever either. So, goodbye to all the threads and characters that I so dearly loved. I'm taking my business elsewhere until they fix theirs.
I had hoped that WotC acquiring D&D Beyond would be a step forward, but it really ended up being a stumble and fall backwards. For one, they still haven't fixed problems in the tools that have been around for years which already made this site a joke to me in the first place. They were content to just keep releasing dice sets and not having new content ready to implement on release, and I would always recommend my players to use anything but this place to host their characters. I only personally ever came here to read the articles and even those are stagnant from what they used to be like.
I will enjoy my hardcovers of 5e but I need to stock up on popcorn to enjoy as you guys dig yourselves deeper into a hole. Oh and haha, nice job with that 'apology' article. You pretty much poured cement onto yourselves in your own grave. You'll still have a fanbase but your most prominent fans will remember this and the sting of the haymaker punch you asked for will likely hurt for years.
I was just gearing up to start a homebrew world after taking a break when all this went down with a master sub and plenty of books purchased here. I still plan to run my game but plan to use the remaining time on my current sub payment to figure out a transition to another system and don't plan to buy 1st party books. So ... Ya. I hope this hurts, WotC. You did it to yourself
Cancelled my subscription. By the way I LOVED D&D Beyond. It has broken my heart to cancel, I was so happy to support it. But then WotC execs thought to themselves, "You know what? We're tired of not being super-SUPER famous as a company. We wanna go down in history as one of the all-time best known. We're thinking...Enron, Tyco, MCI Worldcom, Arthur Andersen, HealthSouth, Adelphia, New Coke, Volkswagen emissions, the Ford Pinto...THAT level of historic fame. Something people will reference in conversation for a century or two, something they will never forget, ya know? Go big or go home. Let's do this!" And...I'm out.
I was a huge advocate for DDB and their amazing digital tools. Now though I have cancelled my subscription and am talking with my group to move to anther system once we finish our current campaign. I do not plan to spend another dollar on D&D or WoTC products for the foreseeable future.
Even if WoTC/Hasbro comes to their senses and keeps OGL 1.0 they have broken the communities trust. It will take not just a reversal of course but a long time to repair the damage WoTC has done.
It's okay guys we're all winning now. Wizards said we won. So I guess we should stop demanding they are held accountable. ~S

You lied to us. Your announcement doesn't match what the leaked revised document now says.
Walk away from this. Don't fall for the "sunk cost" fallacy. This was always a mistake.

Yeah this is an easy way for them to ruin their company. Even backtracking won't help much. They've lost the trust of the community

Just another of the now ever present crowd, vowing to never use a WotC product again.
