Updating Tooltips and Game Materials in the Toolset
With the rules revision, we are updating game materials in the toolset and in tooltips to be in line with the 2024 Core Rulebooks. This change impacts the information you’ll find on your character sheet, in tooltips, and that is linked in the compendium.
I'll be ending my subscription (again) when this change goes live. I only came back when the creative commons license changed were dialed back. This business of paying for physical books, paying for access to digital versions of the same books, and paying a monthly subscription only to no longer have functional access to this content is a ludicrous business decision.
I will no longer subscribe to this platform or buy new content from Hasbro/WotC. You've signaled your intent to restrict access to content Ive paid for at any point.
Yeah, same as others just throwing my voice into what is most likely a futile abyss. All that had to be done was to make either the new or original stuff as toggled content with an added tag. I understand that even if technically they are legally okay to do so, does not mean they have to do it. Like others, I’ll be unsubscribing and moving on from the website. D&D deserved to have people that actually cared for it at the helm, it’s an absolute shame to see the direction it’s heading in now.
For those arguing it’s easy enough just to copy everything; it’s great that you’ve got the time for that…
I however literally pay for the functionality and automation of DDB. It’s what the whole site was based on - otherwise I would have just bought the paper books.
its not on me to do their job for them - if their is a workaround, then they should be the ones providing said work around; by providing all accounts with access to the 2014 versions.
im not prepared to pay a corporation money for a service that I then have to do the leg work on, because thats literally not the point of the service.
they are fundamentally removing my access to a tool set that I have paid for in all functional terms and saying “oh well you can fix that if you want to manually copy everything over - but keep paying us money though.” Is absolutely insane.
genuinely their are numerous TTRPG systems out there and I’m considering just switching over to them because the repeated missteps of this company over the past few years has become somewhat sickening.
You made this as a reply to me, but I do abhor when people do this but don't properly read my posts. So if there is a tone, I am sorry.
Your post is irrelevant to mine except for the "great if you have time", and yes, it will be time-consuming. My point isn't that it won't be. My point is that it won't be as much as somebody claim.
The rest of your post is based on the idea I'm OK with people doing this at all.
So, for like a 2nd or 3rd time, I shall clarify
I AM NOT OK WITH IT
Is this clear now?
My point is not "well you can homebrew so it's OK". I have never made this point. My point is only that it isn't going to be "hours and hours" or that you need to update "hundreds" of spells. You don't. That's it. That's my point. I agree it is shit you have to do this at all - which I have said multiple times. Please can people (not just you, multiple people) stop cherry-picking and making assumptions without reading my posts.
No dude… I deliberately didn’t quote tweet you or say you were okay with anything.
i was responding to people who keep saying it’s easy to copy the content (you being one of them) however at no point did i say that you were fine with it.
if i have something to say to you, ill say It clearly to you. If I say something about a type of response, as I have done here… ill keep It general because the whole point is that it wasn’t supposed to be about if you were okay with the changes or not because frankly it’s irrelevant to me, as I simply don’t care what you’re okay with. (That’s not meant in a mean way, just an honest way… other people’s enthusiasm or lack there of for this change, in no way influences my own)
my statement focused on MY time and MY inconvenience.
My group has been playing since 2018. Like many folks, I've spent hundreds of dollars on D&D Beyond.
I use it because my players are not deep into the rules. We're a bunch of tired 30 and 40 year olds who get together once a week to enjoy each other's company and roll some dice. I only have one player who ever looks anything up in the PHB, otherwise they are using character sheets as their bible because they don't have time to read everything. They learned the system by doing and I keep it afloat by knowing the rules and occasionally tapping the one player at my table of 8 who is also a rules nerd. The benefit of D&D Beyond for me is ease of use for my players who don't want to memorize everything and use their character sheets strongly as a reference.
When our current campaign ended, I had planned to move us to 5.5. I was excited for 5.5, but wanted to adopt it on my own terms. I wanted to keep 5e for my current campaign to be as minimally disruptive as possible while we are near the end of it and switch when we started our next campaign. This sounds like it is no longer an option.
To keep playing our current campaign going using DnD Beyond I'm going to be forced to create each and every homebrew spells and items for my players without having to memorize a whole bunch of new rules and educate my players in changes constantly. It will create significantly more effort for me - effort I happily and literally pay DnD Beyond to reduce - and be incredibly disruptive to my players and game table.
This decision is so fundamentally out of touch with your users and lazy from a product design perspective. There are competing products with similar functions that just have a toggle on the character or campaign, for example, switching between 5e and 5.5. Heck, DnD Beyond has done similar things in the past with new noncore books and Tashas. That this decision could possibly be made by anyone with a passion for helping people play D&D is baffling to me.
I have owned consumer products before. I understand the desire to drive folks to the new shiny toy you've worked so hard on. But I was paying DnD Beyond to solve a problem for me that *you* have decided not to solve any longer. This decision has killed my enthusiasm for the game, for the platform, and desire to continue my subscription.
I can say, with confidence, that when my current campaign is over I'll simply be switching to a different system. Perhaps away from D&D completely. The last year has demonstrated how out of touch some key decision makers have become with your customers and consumers.

Then can I recommend not using the direct reply button . Because the purpose of that button is to tell that poster you're replying directly to them.

If WotC and DDB go through with this, I will be cancelling my subscription and ceasing any and all activity on this platform as well as publicly denouncing D&D Beyond as a toolset. I pay a monthly fee to use the content I have, I don't expect to have to Homebrew content I have already paid for., especially when we have toggles for Legacy content that lets us use older versions of Races AND we have multiple versions of spells already ("Tasha's hideous Laughter" and "Hideous Laughter" as an example).
Barring content we have already paid for is unacceptable
This is a complete disregard for the fanbase that has built this world. Absolute stupidity, we pay for content, and then you yank it away? That’s a borderline theft and I hope someone will take a deep look into this mess, potential class action lawsuit at hand?
What’s even more frustrating is that you’ve got random crowd-funded websites and passionate creators on the internet who can maintain better databases and information across different versions of D&D. These people are managing to keep the history and lore of the game alive unlike this bunch of monkeys.
I’m currently in the middle of what will be my last campaign, as soon as those final dice hit the table, that’s it. I’m walking away, and I’m not looking back. Sooo, congratulations I guess? You’ve driven away another long-time fan. Enjoy counting your greed while you watch the soul of your game wither away. D&D isn’t the only TTRPG out there, nor is it the best. It’s just the most famous, and that is thanks to the legacy built by actual fans over decades. But keep going down this road of plain stupid decisions you've been making lately, and that will change real soon.
I will not be making homebrew items to use content that I paid for in the service that I WAS paying a monthly subscription for. What do you think I'm paying you for Beyond? You think I should give YOU money for the privilege of doing YOUR JOB for you? Subscription cancelled.
Also this post is more than 24 hours old with over 270 replies at the time of my reply. Not a single one of those responses is from Beyond staff. Always good to see companies ignoring customers when they are unhappy. Makes it clear who we should NOT be giving our money to.
This is the sort of thing that makes me glad I own the physical books. We'll probably stop using dndbeyond entirely if this is the expected behavior from the dev team.
It's not just very anti-player, it's anti-TTRPG. We've been looking at other systems for quite some time, this may push us to take the plunge.
My friends and I were planning on switching to the 2024 content after our current 5e campaigns, but if we're now forced to deal with these outrageous changes in the middle of a campaign, we'd rather just move away from this site.
If the character builder is no longer easy to use with our content, what's the point of using it at all?
I won't bother expressing my full analysis as it's been pretty well talked about by everyone else. I hope WotC is paying attention though as they will lose another long term subscriber if they don't alter this decision to allow us to choose which ruleset we play.
Wotc alienating the people that give them money. I've been using this platform for years, purchasing every single book available, and if this goes through it's the last straw. I'd rather use pen and paper than being no longer able to use the content THAT I PAID FOR.
Seriously Wotc, stop focusing on money and LISTEN to the people that line your pockets.

So saving throws and AC among other things on our sheets will change even if it's a 2014 build?
Yes, shadowbpanther, that's absolutely right.
Yep, you will have to use a 2024 character sheet even if you're using a legacy class and homebrew spells.
Apparently it's OK though, because you can still look things up manually in the compendium 🙄 /s

If this is a technical issue, I am very confused. Has DDB not known these changes were coming for a hot minute?
Realistically, things getting dropped on them at the last minute was common pre-WOTC, but that can't be used as an excuse now.
Wotc alienating the people that give them money. I've been using this platform for years, purchasing every single book available, and if this goes through it's the last straw. I'd rather use pen and paper than being no longer able to use the content THAT I PAID FOR.

So, you're stealing content from me that I paid for (the 2014 books) ...and you want me to stay subscribed?
I stuck it out through the OGL bs because I was sure y'all would wake up and see that no one wanted that. I tried to have faith.
I have lost faith.
Do better.
I'm voting with my pocket. Goodbye.
I don't understand the idea they're stealing content. They're removing functionality but the content, the books, you still have those.EDIT: I understand now. I wasn't thinking.
