In the first changelog it was planned that every user would be subject to the new 2024 rules. In today's update about listing to user feedback it was stated "Players who only have access to the 2014 Player’s Handbook will maintain their character options, spells, and magical items in their character sheets. Players with access to the 2024 and 2014 digital Player’s Handbooks can select from both sources when creating new characters." This implies users who pay for the current PHB will not be automatically upgraded to the new content. Can someone please verify whether or not users who own the 2014 PHB, DMG, and MM content will have to re-purchase the new content? Thanks!
Of course you will. Why would you get the new books for free? They'll get the updated basic rules out for free, as they are now for 2014, but you'll need to purchase a new PHB to get full access to 2024 character options. Just like you need the 2014 PHB to access everything currently.

You were always going to have to rebuy the content. D&D Beyond was going to reflect some of the changes in tool tips, but now will not. So originally you would have access to spells and equipment. But you were always going to have to buy the book if you wanted classes, subclasses, etc.
Now to get any 2024 content you will have to buy the 2024 version.

We’ve been told that MOST of what’s in the 2024 PHB will be added to Creative Commons, which means it will be part of the free 2024 Basic Rules.
We don’t know exactly which options will be available for free, but I believe it will be more content than what’s in the 2014 Basic Rules. In any case look at that document as a minimum guide.
