I'm not clear on what the "Additional Purchase Options" means; the word Additional makes things ambiguous. It can be read either as "If you're not bothered about buying the main book you can just buy these Sub Classes etc from the book" or it can be read as "You buy the book for your reference, but then you also have to buy the Sub Classes etc if you want to use them in the character builder and your campaigns". Which is it?
Essentially, is that "Additional Purchase" options, or Additional "Purchase Options".
And will there ever be a "You own the hardcovers, here buy the digital tools for half price" option? Because DAMN that's expensive to buy a little convenience.
The additional purchase options are, "additional options for purchasing" as in, instead of purchasing the whole Player's Handbook, you can just purchase the race and/or class that you need and use that for your character in the character builder/sheet.
It's worth noting as well that any purchases of partial content made in this manner discount the cost of the overall Player's Handbook.
So, if you wanted to play a Dark Elf (Drow) Assassin, that's $3.98 to purchase (Drow and Assassin are $1.99 each). From that point forward, the cost of the Player's Handbook will be reduced by that $3.98 that is already spent.
With regards offering free unlocks of the goods on D&D Beyond due to owning the hardcover books, that isn't possible. If there is some way of doing that in the future, it will 100% not apply to any existing hardcover books.
Great, thanks for the clarification - hopefully it can be worded or presented in a clearer way for others too. Nice to know about the price offsetting too, that's good!
Yeah, I didn't expect free digital content to happen - but a discount for buying the electronic version of already purchased hardcover versions would be great. Authentication is the issue, I know, so I totally understand why Beyond can't do that with existing book purchases - but I'd hope something got put in place in future. I wish Amazon did it too, it's such an obvious thing from a consumer point of view; get the hardcover and pay a little more to also get the digital version. Paying an extra 20% to do that would be a no-brainer, but paying double?
People have asked for some sort of "hardback + D&D Beyond access" bundle a fair amount, so that may happen in the future, but I don't know what contractual negotiations would be needed by staff to accomplish that.
Hi,
I'm looking at buying the players handbook here on Beyond so I can use it in campaigns. https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/source/2

Hi there MattWilcox,
I'll see if I can help explain.

Here's a purchase FAQ that may also help.
