I noticed that the species choices are Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Human......The same as the original. I'm curious.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Played original and 1e in college, then during the pandemic, picked up 5e, 2014 and now 2024 rules, DMG, MM. Have been gaming since the 60s, with a renewed interest in D&D, with all the choices for world building, adventures and character creation, both PCs and NPCs.
The Free Rules are an abridged version of the 5e rules from the 2024 Player's Handbook, with a limited set of character options. I'm sure the fact that those species options are classics is why they were included.
Also, the available species in Basic D&D were Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Fighter, Cleric, Thief, and Magic User.
More seriously, for this version of the free rules, they seem to have gone for "only the species that are arguably from folklore, and also halflings, which are totally not ripped off from Tolkien". The D&D-specific species (and also orcs) are non-free. (Though we don't know what's going to be in the official SRD when they release it.)
