I would love for there to be some way the race could have a different size based on how the character is created. My original race is "Returned (Medium)" with many subraces based on already existing races. I would like to extend it's subraces to Halflings and other "Small" races, and have their size be appropriately listed as small, without having to duplicate all my work by creating a "Returned (Small)" race, but I don't believe this is currently an option.
Anyway just a request! Mandatory and unchangeable race size like an arbitrary restriction to me which I would love to have removed or have some workaround for.
It's similar, but the intent is for it to work within the current D&D Beyond infrastructure, and also still be balanced as it's own race. I could use a feat or something for this since being an Undead is a sort of a modifier, but I do still have a reason for the request. The second race I am making is currently "Construct (Medium)" which I would again love to just list as "Construct" and have some choice of size with upsides and downsides.
It sounds like what you're looking for is Options which is already available to you. You use the options tool to let the player pick Small or Medium, and add the distinct modifiers to those options.
Racial Trait: Size
Option: 1) Medium / 2) Small
Small: Modifiers -> Whatever you choose to be the effect of Small Medium: Modifiers -> Whatever you choose to be the effect of Medium
As a bonus of doing this, any traits you want available only to one size or another you can choose the prerequisite racial trait to be one or the other. Seems like an ideal method. :)
Of course it's important to remember that other than size itself and the mechanics inherent to that rule there's not a consistent rule for what abilities a Small creature gets. For example, a part-Halfling may have 25ft, but a Goblin has 30ft of movement.
The above is doable but there is no way to actually change the Size displayed on a character sheet based on this kind of choice from what I've found. I believe I could manually change the carrying capacity of the race to match the size it should be, so they'd mechanically be the same? I'm concerned if there's any other kinds of size-based rules-enforcement build into D&D beyond however. Also it would just be nice for the character sheet to be accurate. ><

Sounds more like you're trying to create a template (like the Monster Manual's Half-Dragon) than a distinct race.
