When you have a notification a red dot appears next to your profile name in the right-right.
If you have a new notification or want to see previous notifications click your profile name then click notifications.

I do have the dot but the new format is very hard to use the way I want to use it - which is to go to the first unread post since I last visited in any thread that notifies me. I don't want to see a tree of the dates. Just a list of threads that have new unread messages, with a link to read the oldest of those new messages. Thanks!!

How notifications looked and acted when viewing from an iphone.
Turns out that viewing normally on laptop notification dot appears normally, clearly visible, in top-right. However, when I checked to view this on iphone and added a new reply using my test account there was no notification at all.
It's like the full site version checks and displays notification normally but mobile site version doesn't, as far as I can tell. Which is weird.

This is definitely a confusing way to do it. Depending on which member of this "tree" I click on, the red dot is not going away until I whack-a-mole the correct "branch". Very strange behavior and the way the poster I quoted described is definitely more logical.

No dot next to my name. I only visit on mobile. I have a little picture, no name no dot.
Looks like if I click my picture it drops down and then shows Notifications with a little red dot that currently says 2.
So I have to go looking for notifications. If I have to look for them they aren't notifications.
I also have new messages but nothing next to messages that says there are new ones.

Edit: How you get to that without the link is you go to the top of a forum, then you press "Tools" and then "new content"
