DId you know? The DDB marketplace has REMOVED the option for purchasing one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters "a la carte". Now you ALWAYS have to buy the ENTIRE book instead.
Unhappy? UNSUBSCRIBE and Let them know your thoughts!
For those interested, a quote from Brian Perry from his AMA on Reddit
'First, we know that a la carte disappeared without much notice, and we apologize for the way it was handled. Things like this AMA help create the level of transparency the community deserves. We are going to be working on ways to give players access to smaller packages of content based on what character they want to build. A la carte exactly like before is unlikely. What was starting to happen with tens of thousands of items needed to be individually checked for entitlements by our services. This was impacting site speed and stability.'
It's a shame they won't be bringing back the same functionality, but anything is better than nothing.

Probably because it was packed full of misinformation about the starter packs?
That would deserve a post about the topic from staff, a takedown of the post is unwarranted. However...
As quoted above, there were technical issues behind why they stopped offering individual items as purchases. These packs are a step in the right direction toward bringing back similar functions. And it's at least transparent about what items exactly are included.
Why they don't discount based on already-owned content, I'm not sure. That's the scammy part to me.

Was that last one ever promised explicitly in the pitch itself?

Not relevant to my point in the slightest. None of what it is was explicitly promised in its current form, but that doesn't affect how this gets perceived. And considering every single thing when we had piecemeal would deduct from the products they were a part of, this is a direct downgrade from how it was treated previously. All things are relevant, not just what they explicitly stated about this in particular.
The class packs are 5.99. I own the 5.5 handbook, so the only thing I get out of these packs are the Premade character and the dice. Most dice are 5.99. I'd say they are already discounted.... and that is for everyone.
Edit: I also own the Mordenkainen book so again I get nothing out of 5.99 where most people get several subclasses and 2 races for the price of digital dice.
I think they are trying to provide a variety of ways people can get content without having to commit to larger purchases. While the original way was tiny pieces at a time was great I can understand it causing issues that I assume would have only gotten worse as more and more content was added. But for those starting out that don't have access to anything yet or don't own anything I think the starter packs would be of interest to them. As things stand right now I assume people sub. And given that thought, content sharing as a result of said persons sub seems to be the most ideal way to access the content one would have otherwise done a la carte. When I was playing with a group of local players for a couple of years we all had access to everyone else's content. In our case that was a mix of dndbeyond and hard copy stuff. I think sharing of ones collection digital or hard copy is what really would work the best as sharing your books back in the day was the only way to share in costs.
these starter packs took basic FREE content from the core books that originally were FREE when you created a FREE account and they started slapping price tags on FREE content to Generate money from FREE content that is supposed to be FREE. the 3 basic core books were supposed to be FREE if you created a FREE account that came with 5 FREE character Slots to begin playing but you could purchase the expanded content for a price by buying the additional books required. As soon as WOTC got a hold of it, you use to get the Essentials kit free to create characters which limited the some of the core books info but was still useful but now the character generator is now been nerfed and you cant hardly make a character without running into paywalls everywhere and the content you have access to is SEVERLY limited, even though most of 5th edition is now "Creative Commons" in the OGL (Original Gaming License) of 2023.
Creative Commons CC-BY-4.0: The SRD 5.1 and 5.2 are licensed under CC-BY-4.0, which is considered a permanent, "one-way door" open license that cannot be revoked.
What is Included: The SRD contains core mechanics, classes, races, spells, and monsters from the 5th edition (5.1 for 2014 rules, 5.2 for 2024 rules).
Usage Rights: You can create and sell adventures, monster books, setting guides, and supplements.
Alternative License (OGL): While SRD 5.1 is in Creative Commons, it remains available under the original Open Game License (OGL) v1.0a, providing flexibility to creators.
The shift to Creative Commons occurred in 2023 following community feedback, ensuring the core 5e rules remain open

This is objectively wrong. The base classes and a single subclass for each are free, that hasn't changed. These offer the PHB parts of the classes, a couple of feats that aren't part of the OGL or Basic Rules, and a couple of Expanded Rules species. None of this is OGL, SRD, BR, or CC content.

wrong, I've been here before WOTC took over, all the stuff in the "Player Packs" were originally free back when i didn't pay for a subscription, it all changed when they took over and when they introduced the 2024 and DnD one rules.
None of that is true.
The base classes (and one subclass each) have always been free and still are. The subclasses included in these packs are from the Player's Handbook, which has never been free and still isn't.
You seem to be getting two things mixed up here: a subscription (which is a recurring monthly cost, and which does not give you access to any character options) and non-free digital books (which are one-time costs, and do contain character options).
If you made an Eldritch Knight Fighter in 2018, it's because you owned the digital version of the 5e Player's Handbook (or had access to it through content sharing). It had nothing to do with whether you had a paid subscription or not (and still doesn't).
You can still do that with the 5e Fighter class as long as you still own that book (or have access through content sharing). To do it with the 5.5e Fighter class, you'd have to purchase the 5.5e Player's Handbook (or this new Fighter class pack). You still do not need a paid subscription.
This is the exact same misinformation (or potentially disinformation) that likely got the first thread taken down.
when the 2024 rules were introduced the the 2014 rules were entered into the OGL and SRD.
The 2014 Basic Rules, nothing more than that. The Eldritch Knight was never part of those rules (the single "martial archetype" in the Basic Rules is Champion). The 2014 Eldritch Knight would only be accessible by:
Purchasing the 2014 Player's Handbook
An a la carte purchase of that subclass back when that was an option
Content sharing
It was never free, nor included in a subscription.
The Class packs only cost 4.99$. Reduce the price of the PHB only once it doesn’t stack of 5$. Give everyone who didn't get some of the Dice though subscription. By the way other dice cost around 5.99$. Also we get a pre-made character, as someone who wants to DM for his neice and her brother wen they old enough this is a very fair price.
So what is the problem exactly.
Edit: even Roll20 doesn't offer the core books for free.

The fact that they didn’t even make/design new dice for the releases makes me pretty mad tbh, very annoying to just not even try. Feels very lazy.
Once it was too many dice, not enough site tinkering.
Now too few dice, & too much site tinkering is the problem.
Also, again...where were all-new, all-different dice promised w/this?

I assumed the digital dice being re-issues was a deliberate choice. The starter packs feel designed for people who don't have everything already.
