I noticed that it is impossible to level a character beyond 20. I am aware that in the official rules for D&D 5e, 20 is the max level, but it would be very nice if DMs could homebrew a leveling scheme beyond level 20. I realize that this can be kind of accomplished by adding custom feats as "class features" and overriding the HP, but in the end it still says level 20 on the character sheet, and after level 20, keeping track of XP points will have to be done manually. If possible I would like the following features:
- Being able to add levels to each class or at least be able to add levels to a custom class (e.g. I could make a "Barbarian+" class that caps at lvl 30)
- Being able to set XP requirements for each level
- Being able to set custom class features for each level
- Continuing automatic HP calculation for custom post 20 levels
- Being able to create multiclass characters with combined levels above 20 (e.g. Level 20 rogue and level 20 wizard for a combined level of 40)
I am sure that post level 20 campaigning is something that a lot of DMs want to be made easier. If these changes can be implemented, it will make a lot of DMs happy. Could you please let me know if the changes above are possible or if they are possibly planned for a future update?
I'm traveling so don't have the links handy, but the game designers from Wizards of the Coast have said their research shows that the vast majority of games never reach even close to level 20.
I would imagine that any system that expands past level 20 would be of use to an even smaller proportion of players.
I understand this doesn't help you and your group, but the problem is that any support for homebrew post-20 would have to be a comprehensive system to allow the rules to flex how you want.
Simply put, the large amount of development that would require is better assigned to features that will be used by the majority of players.
I'm thinking here of features like the granular sharing of rule books, homebrew improvements, DM screen/page, containers & inventories.
I guess that makes sense. Either way, there's enough flexibility in the system for me to jerry-rig a post lvl 20 leveling system, and characters can still get stronger with feats and magic items so I will be able to make it work.
If enough people request it, I hope you guys will consider implementing it, but I'm guessing you haven't received too many complaints so far.
It may change soon. There's a few eidolons that will give huge exp bonuses. I don't do small figures, but let's go moderate with that. how about it's limited to 1500% (for now)?
Careful, though, the meta plus pandemonium eidolons would spell disaster to this.

This statement is meant to be both provocative and condescending. Look at these pathetic huddled masses in their private and closed games, cringing behind the policy of no homebrews and no custom content. This is an insult and injury even to fire types. HEED THIS! Your better off playing rpgmaker. It's everything this place wants to be when it grows up. Seriously. Otherwise, good luck, they will overdo things. All because of safety and security... kor.

Thank you very much for the response!

Have a great Thanksgiving!
Who knows what the future will bring! Wizards of the Coast may even produce an epic high level rules compendium themselves at some point.

That would be awesome. Here's to hoping! Thanks, Stormknight!
