If you want both, you'll need to purchase both separately. alternatively you could purchase the essentials kit, that includes a code not only for the adventure that can be redeemed on the site, but also a code for 50% off the digital version of the player's handbook.
New here, but I just ordered the physical PHB and the Essentials Kit from an online reseller. Will that Essentials Kit come with a code usable towards the digital version here? Or would I have had to purchase the EK through DDB? Also, in re: the digital edition, is it only available as part of this website, or is there a downloadable piece which can be used offline on an iPad or similar device offline?

The physical essentials kit comes with 2 codes. 1 unlocks the full essentials kit for free on DDB, so don't spend money you don't have to. The other gives a 50% discount on the PHB on DDB. The physical PHB comes with no codes.
There is a mobile app (apple and Android) that lets you download books to your device for offline use. There is no easy way to use books offline on a PC.
When it comes to building characters and looking up spells I feel DDB is really superior to r20, nice to hear they have a VTT planned at some point.
