So my play group has started to move to become all digital including using a virtual table and it looks like our software/table of choice is Fantasy Grounds. Unfortunately Fantasy grounds UI and character creation system is pale in comparison of DnD Beyond! So what we'd like to do is use DnD Beyond to store/advance/track our characters and then just use Fantasy Grounds as a virtual table/HP/Combat tracker.
The main piece missing to be able to do this, is the ability to import the characters into Fantasy Grounds. I believe it was mentioned that releasing the API was going to be coming. Any news on that front?
Hey Wizards, I've been playing D&D for 42 years. I think you are mostly doing things really right now for the game I love. However you just shut down the brilliant Fantasy Grounds exporter form D&D Beyond at:
Either give the site owner the approval to reopen or do a Fantasy Grounds exporter yourselves. I was about to suggest to all my players they all use Beyond to generate new characters instead of using a spreadsheet or doing in Fantasy grounds. They may have bought content from you instead of relying on the paper manuals! You just lost revenue! Duh!
until such time that we have an API in place, we have to make sure to block scripts/bots from "scraping" data from the D&D Beyond website.
Whilst I can't go into details, I can say that the volume of such sites/services was growing and the impact of this was such a volume of traffic generated by these services, that our actual users were unable to use D&D Beyond.
As with any situation, we need to place our users first and steps had to be taken to do that.

Stormknight already addressed the actual question... but I just wanted to point out that DDB is not run by Wizards of the Coast. D&D Beyond is owned by Fandom. Wizards of the Coast is part of Hasbro. They're 2 separate companies. DDB just has a licensing agreement with WotC to distribute their content.
Just to add my vote for releasing a solution to exporting to Fantasy Grounds issue.
I also used to get my players to build in D&DB and then export for playing in FG and this worked great, but, if it comes to a choice between continuing to use D&DB for building characters or Fantasy Grounds for running the game, unfortunately Fantasy Grounds wins out and we won't be able to continue to use D&DB for character building.
I hope this is resolvable as cross compatibility between applications makes for the best user experience, which I'm sure is what we all want. No one app is going to get everything perfect, and many will destroy themselves trying, rather than allowing the users to mix and match to their own preferences.
D&D Beyond has by far the best Character management tools and Fantasy Grounds the best campaign/table top management tools. So I and my players use both. I buy ALL my material (player and dm products) through D&D Beyond. I then have to buy my DM products through Fantasy Grounds.
But we depend upon this site to allow the movement of character data between the two systems.
So, I also ask that this site be given special dispensation.
Barring that we can always copy the JSON from the D&D Beyond site by hand through our browser and paste it in a file. Then we can run the transformation software on the contents of that file. It will cost us more time and headache and you will still have the same load on your system. But we can adhere to the terms of service doing that. Correct?

"or other software"
For Roll20, I've been working on an API that can import D&D Beyond characters. Link is in my signature below.
I haven't seen anything for Fantasy Grounds yet.

Dave was looking into doing so and I've pointed him to your work. So hopefully he might not have to reinvent the whole wheel.

What an annoying, stupid & short sighted move!

Hi there Altend,

As noted in the Terms of Service,
That said, developing an API framework is absolutely on the roadmap and it's something the team are keen to do right.
Thank you for your understanding.
