Having a hard time equipping a shield to a character in the character creator. 'Shield' doesn't seem to come up under equipment when I search for it at the 'add equipment' section.
Am I doing something wrong?
For context, the character did not start our game with a shield but has since acquired it.
EDIT: So the problem appears to be that the character isn't proficient with medium or heavy armor. The player understands this and the problems it imposes on spellcasting etc, and Wants to carry a shield anyway. Why can't they?
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
Looks like others have come through with the answer. The character sheet by default has proficient on so new players don't accidentally use items that aren't useful to them.
Using a shield without proficiency causes:
you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
