In the UA tattoos, you could have a total of 3 and it would only require 1 attunement slot. Previously they did not require the attunement to be selected on the character sheet for the feat/stats to be added (I used a homebrew tattoo in place to take the attunement slot).
In the new update with Tasha's cauldron of everything, all of the Tattoo's require their own attunement slot to apply the stats/feat. I can't find in the new update where the 3 magic tattoos rule applies. Was this changed in the update? Does 1 tattoo use up an entire attunement slot now?
It seems like a waste to even have a magic tattoo because other magic items you attune to are way more powerful than the tattoos offered. The one bonus to tattoos before was that you could stack a total of 3 as long as you had the space for the extra tattoos on your body.
UA is play test content and is intentionally on the OP (over powered) side. It is typically tamed down before publication, which is what appears to have happened here, since there is no mention of 3 tattoos taking an attunement slot in the rules for tattoos in Tashas. If you and your DM agreed you wanted to use the UA rules, and one of you purchased Tashas (or the relevant tattoss here) that person could make homebrew copies and remove the attunement requirement. Then you would take one "regular" tatto and take two homebrew/non attunement tattoos for a tattoo "slot."
Thanks, I kind of figured that's what happened. In my opinion I think they could've put more effort into balancing it out by allowing a max of 2 or for the weaker ones, not requiring an attunement at all. Luckily dndbeyond makes homebrew really easy.
