I'm very glad I didn't delete the old reader app off my tablet, so I can be patient, but it'll be nice to see this get taken care of. I DID take it off my phone, but maybe I can side load it back on.
I wanted to give you a small update of what is happening.
As a temporary solution in 2.0.2 we enabled the Android built-in SD card management which is available only if you format the SD card as the extension to internal memory. The majority of phones and OS versions are going to move the book files properly if you set it up like this and pick it as the destination drive in the device's settings.
However, certain brands configure Android differently and may disable this option or move only the app itself.
Providing the option to fully support SD cards is no trivial task and it is going to take some time but we are aware of the need and will address it.

I selected the option to format my SD from the "app storage location" but there doesnt seem to be an option to actually set it as the default download location?
I'm just kinda frustrated over here when I've got a device with only 16gb of internal storage (but a 64gb SD card); Samsung not caring that they removed adoptable storage feature; and you guys saying it's gonna take time, even though the old app had this feature.
Like why remove the old app from the play store if the new app isn't feature-complete? That's kinda a jerky thing to do, sorry to say.
I managed to find an APK of the old reader app and reinstall it (it can still be updated to the latest version via the Play Store, at least), and I'm back to using that for my compendium until this glaring oversight is corrected.
And LG, too. Between the two of them that's somewhere around 25% of all smartphones in the United States. (Possibly higher, it fluctuates between about 22% and 30%.)
Not a quarter of all Android smartphones -- a quarter of all smartphones period.
I'm going to say it again, and I'm going to keep saying it: Support for the existing app should not have been discontinued until the new one was actually finished.

And in Europe about 32% - 35% of all Smartphones (if the numbers I found are correct)
Just to keep everyone in the loop, the recent dev update & Q&A included a brief mention about the external storage for the mobile app's content... fingers crossed we'll get an update soon that sorts it for most of us. Here's the video (he mentions the external storage around 14:25):
Well, it's good to know they are actively working on it "pretty heavily", although "a bit further down the road" and "very soon" are sort of an odd contradiction. I guess that's on brand for the D&D Beyond promise of "very soon...ish".
I just wanted to say I really do appreciate the hard work the devs put into the app and all of D&D Beoyond... I just really question the decision to deprecate the fully-functional "old" compendium app when the compendium integration into the "new" player app was not at feature parity.
Also, in case "very soonish" isn't before September, do we know if the new books (Witchlight/Strixhaven/Fizbin's) will show up in the "old" compendium app?

There is a pretty good chance they will. The new App came a while before Van Richtens was released but I kept the old app until I was sure the new one works properly. Van Richtens still showed up in the old app, so the other books might aswell.
Ok, according to the Change Log it should work now, however, I can not find the Option anywhere.
Edit: I would very kindly ask you to ignore my complaining, the Play Store had some issues with actually updating the app. It seems to work perfectly (for now).
Thanks to everyone who took our complaints seriously and worked on this feature.

Perfectly might be an exaggeration, I am unable to download Xanathars, Ghost of Saltmarsh, and Dragon of Icespire Peak. I retried, I restarted the App, I restarted the Phone, I can't download them.
Thanks a ton for this effort. It has worked for me as intended. A note to folks who may overlook an important step, if you are like me you might forget in the Android app to hit your profile/avatar icon in the top left corner to find the toggle that activates this feature, it is defaulted to off, and needs to be activated.

I'm very excited to hear this.

Nvm I misunderstood
I mean, this rules out all Samsung devices.

Yeah, I'm suspecting they might pull from the same source. 🤞

Woo! THANK YOU!! Updated on all three of my Android devices and all sources downloaded and saved to the SD cards without a problem.
Huzzah! Thanks to the devs!

Thanks for the update! It's a good 5GB of space saved. Still can't transfer bookmarks from the old app, but I can live with that.
Thank YOU for all your patience!
