I was wondering if there was anyway to Homebrew a fun yet just dragon rider class, whether there all ready is one, whether there is any just solution at all and whether they should be added in the official rules. I mean in dungeons and DRAGONS surely you should be able to be a dragon rider.
Is your character sheet on Beyond? If so, you can probably figure something out with your DM. Like, a fighter which found a dragon egg, and it hatches and slowly grows over time.
And, as Dravaal says, the Drakewarden is an excellent choice
The problem is that the smallest plausibly rideable dragon is CR 6, and obtaining a CR 6 persistent ally is well outside the power level of any PC class (a 13th level paladin can obtain a CR 2 ally using Find Greater Steed).
If you search homebrew there are a few Dragonrider classes, at least one I think whose creator is a regular on the board, I imagine Third will stop by to link it to save you the look up,

This. More generally speaking, It's difficult to tie dragon mounts to a class, particularly at middling levels, in the context of the current class balance. The Drake Warden is UA, so playtest material, and might be toned down if it ever gets published. A Dragonlance sourcebook might make it possible, but I wouldn't expect dragon riding to be formalized as anything but a tier 4 possibility.
That doesn't mean a DM might not make dragon mounts available at lower levels, but it'd be something that needed to be compensated for significantly - insofar as they are even practically useful as is, CRs and ELs would have to go right out the window. I see this as something appropriate for a campaign specifically tailored for the concept, with encounters, challenges and enemies designed around the PCs' significantly enhanced power level.

I'll say this.
The moment you even mention "I want to be able to ride a dragon" you simply need to rule of cool everything and absolutely throw away things like -
Balance
Rules as Written
What's in the book
Do you. There is 0 harm in creating anything that makes you smile. For dragonriders, go the video game route. Look up Guild Wars 2 Skyscale Mount. Use that as inspiration for how and why you get a dragon mount. Use any sort of Dragonhunter(y) game similar to the Avatar movie where you find a rare creature, learn to tame it, etc. etc.
As MidnightPlat said, I do have a homebrew Dragonrider Fighter Subclass, though it is still a work in progress and has not been publicly shared on the homebrew builder for this site. Check it out and use it if you like.

Well that's because Find Greater Steed (which, by the way, is hilariously mismatched when it comes to creatures it allows - I mean, Dire Wolf vs. Griffon?) is only a small part of Paladin's class - and not even the most important one. Aside from being able to cast more other spells, Paladin hits like a truck, has huge saves and decent healing abilities etc.
There is absolutely a room for a more potent creature as a permanent ally to a class that does not nova hit for 100+ damage.
Oooh, I might need to save this for my own campaign setting. Thanks for the link.
But, a good question to ask is what are you actually looking for as far as a Dragon Rider. Are you just wanting a mount that is Draconic in nature? A Modified Guard Drake with wings or a Wyvern mount could be enough to get your Dragon riding kick.
Or, are you wanting to have a Dragon Rider relationship that’s more like Eragon and Sapphira from the Inheritance Series, where the Dragon is intelligent, grows larger and more powerful and has its own wants, personality and faults? The two classes/subclasses links in this thread so far have dragons that are more like this.

Sure, bu there's a hard cap that you certainly can't have an ally that's as powerful as a same-level PC all by itself, and a Young dragon is generally at about the same power level as a tier 3 PC, which pretty much means "If riding a dragon is the only thing you can do and you're otherwise a hit point sack, possible by tier 3, otherwise tier 4".

Hey adventures and creates of worlds.

There's a UA ranger subclass called the "Drakewarden" . They start out having a dragon pet/summon and eventually grows large enough to ride.
it's a small pet so you can't ride it.
At level 15 (among other things):
Your bond to your drake reaches the pinnacle of its power. While your drake is summoned, you and the drake gain the following benefits:

Also, take a look at this.
you have to wait to 15th level and in a campaign I've never gotten to that point and i also have to be a small creature

Right, sorry Third, I forgot you got that playtest system set up. But your rider was the first thing I thought of when the OP asked.
