what god do the serve? when did they join their temple, why?
Perhaps she got into a fight and almost died, and the group that healed her was this temple, so she started following that god.
Does she guard the temple, following their practices more loosely than a cleric or paladin?
Did the temple take her in at a young age and now she is trying to prove her worth to the world?
Why is she adventuring? Power, glory, prove her worth, money, or maybe escaping something? Start with that, then move on. How did she join the temple? Who does she know? Start small and then get bigger

Very simple, but you can take it almost anywhere. Perhaps you became a Fighter because you wanted to track your family down and find out why they left you. Any items left with you could become important clues, kept carefully and treasured. You could go through all sorts of trials and tribulations to find out that your father was one of the great kings of men, and that you are next in line for the throne, or that your father was Joe Nobody who has been tending the garden in the very same temple you lived in, and was just ashamed of something in his own past.
You started off serving at the temple in a small out of the way town as a child. During your time there working with the clergy the town was attacked and you were forced to defend yourself and your temple using a fallen town Guards sword (or whatever weapon you choose to wield). After the attack you kept the weapon and began training with it to further your skills. As you got a little older you left the town and temple to further your training
You are a religious fanatic who wants to kill everyone who doesn't worship the same god as you do. You carry a sign that says "[Name of deity] hates hags".
You’re part of a military sect of your church, acting as guards, protectors, defenders of the faith. The sect escorts the High Clergy when they travel on missions for their god. And you are the tip of the spear in advancing the goals of the church and your god
a failed paladin, that never got a gods blessing. it's basic but can be expounded on and leaves you open to some interesting rp options in terms of eventual multiclassing if you so choose to do so

I was kind of under the assumption that backgrounds were 5e characters backstories.
Dad is a priest. You want to see the world. You like to fight.
There, done.

Abandoned on the steps of a temple as an infant.

Have fun in your games.
