I'm playing a goliath fighter. +5 to strength, so my party agreed I should have the +1 flail we found. It's +8 to hit and 1d8+8 damage.
I'm trying to trade/buy a better weapon, but the bonuses have me confused. A greatsword or maul, for example, is showing me +8 to hit but 2d6+6 instead of +8. Why is it not adding my proficiency bonus? I'm proficient in martial weapons. Is it because they're "heavy"? I'm a goliath - doesn't seem like that should be an issue.

You don't add proficiency to damage rolls.
While attacking with a weapon with which you have proficiency, you add your relevant ability modifier and your proficiency bonus to the attack roll. When rolling damage, you add your ability modifier, but not your proficiency bonus. (Unless you engage in two-weapon fighting without the appropriate fighting style, in which you wouldn't even add the relevant ability modifier to the damage roll!)
More than likely you have the Dueling fighty style which means that a +1 flail with +5 strength will indeed produce +8.
Since a greatsword is not affected by that style it would not receive the +2 damage bonus from Dueling.
Ah yes, sorry - forgot to mention I have dueling. Didn't realize those weapons don't receive the bonus from dueling. That explains it. Thank you!

No worries! Glad we could help you solve it!
A Necromancy wizard's Undead Thralls beg to differ. Let's not be too hasty with the absolutes.
