(Insert Character Name) graduated from the Wizards Academy as a "Book Binder, Cataloguer and Wizardly Bilbographer 1st Class", upon starting work (Insert Character Name) realised that, dispite all the hard work and sleepless nights of studying they had gone through, they were merely a librarian and worst of all, a cleaner.
One night whilst dutifully attending to the various duties expected of them they came across a woman reading a book, the woman was old and hunched over and was having obvious difficulty reading the book, not least of all because she had the book upside down. The woman spun round to catch (insert Character Name) unawares and turned from the old woman into a very tall entity with curved horns and wicked looking claws, she introduced herself as "Maggie" and offered (Insert Character Name) a deal, she would tutor (Insert Character Name) and grant them great magical power to rival that of the Wizards that looked down on (Insert Character Name) in exchange for doing a few "odd Jobs" for Maggie.
(Insert Character Name) accepted and dreams of using the magical powers Maggie teaches them to earn the respect of the Wizards.
**The pact**
Right oh, the pact itself manifests as this. The Character must wear a red leather cap (which they must dip in the blood of any creature they slay) and carry a sickle and must carry these items on their person whenever possible and if they are lost they must be replaced as soon as possible (DM decides on appropriate time scale and failure to do so may incur some form of punishment).
Maggie is actually Mad Maggie, a powerful Night Hag from Avernus who is looking to recruit mortals so that they will eventually join her on Avernus (either by journing there or dying and their soul going to her) and she will then transform them into the twisted Fey creatures known as Redcaps and swell the ranks of the redcaps already in her service.
As such as the Warlock grows in power they become more like the Redcap in thought and deed and the Warlock develops a set of superstitions intricately interweaving with one another. In particular, they believed even numbers were unlucky, and thus would only carry odd numbers of coins and formed groups with an odd number of members. They refused to soak their caps in the blood of another Warlock or Redcap if they serve Maggie, for fear of a curse. They believe rivers were home to water spirits that could steal their souls; thus, they washed themselves only in still water.
Maggie may contact them and ask them to do the occasional job but otherwise leave them to their own devices.
I have one of those. Half-Elf Warlock of the Fiend. Her Patron is the Queen of the Succubi, who wants to corrupt the soul of a sweet girl and keeps giving her more power so she can enjoy the show.
If you're in Faerun, you could be a researcher for a noble family in Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate, in which you discovered your employer's infernal ties to the Nine Hells but went along with it. Other than that, I have no idea.

Half-Elf Warlock (Pact of the Fiend), hmm?
Let me try.
If you're in Faerun, you could be a researcher for a noble family in Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate, in which you discovered your employer's infernal ties to the Nine Hells but went along with it. Other than that, I have no idea.
