I think this is in he right forum but if it's not my apologies, I'm new to D&D beyond. I have an idea for a character who used to be a baker but got so lonely/bored he wanted to become a pro [something] to bring his pastries to life. My problem is I can't figure out if [something] would be an wizard (necromancy or transmutation, idk which would be able to animate non-animate objects) or an artificer (of which I don't know much about). If someone can help me figure out which would suit my character better and maybe a race or something to combo with it, that'd be great. Thanks!
I think I'll suggest another direction and point you towards summoning and conjuring spells. They're not quite the same as animating objects through magic, but they can be reskinned as such and will offer more (and lower level) options. Might have to make some flavor allowances in terms of character though.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
I’d say choose a Wizard, and at some point, take the “Artificer Initiate” feat.
This allows you to use a set of tools as a spellcasting focus, in this case, “Cooking Tools”.
The full spellcasting progression of a Wizard allows you to pull off the “feel” of this character with a wide assortment of spells.
Sprinkles? Magic Missile.
Icing? Cone of Cold.
A pastry familiar? Tiny Servant.
A literal gingerbread house? Leomund’s Tiny Hut.
Anything that deals bludgeoning damage can be re-“flavored” as something pertaining to a baked hood. (Erupting Earth? More like erupting CHOCOLATE).
You could likewise re-flavor the summoned undead of a Necromancy Wizard as either necrotic cupcakes or gingerbread men (replacing zombies or skeleton, respectively).
Transmutation Wizard is a “safe” choice.
I might suggest Scribe Wizard, too…your spellcook could literally become a cookbook, and you ability to alter spells can serve as “recipes”.

I like this approach....you could go with Star Druid with magic initiate for Find Familiar to start then eventually you can get whatever you want through conjure spells.

This is true, I like the idea of the scribe wizard, but I think I'll take this in to consideration and use these. Thanks :D

Is this necessary? In the PHB it says that the wizard's spell casting focus can be an "Arcane Focus", "a special item ... designed to channel the power of arcane spells." So maybe it can be some kind of rolling pin/wooden spoon or something of the matter custom made by a close wizarding acquaintance.
Also if I wouldn't need to take the feat, I could take "Chef" instead which could also work well with the character.

I really like these ideas! I plan on using these on my character, and definitely Scribe Wizard (I hadn't even heard of this!) Thank you very much!

Both Wizard and Artificer gain access to the spells catapult, tiny servant, and animate objects. Wizard gains access to them first, though.
Come participate in the Competition of the Finest Brews, Edition XXVIII?
My homebrew stuff:
Spells, Monsters, Magic Items, Feats, Subclasses.
I am an Archfey, but nobody seems to notice.
