I just bought Curse of Strahd and I noticed that some MM monsters were unlocked, but I also found a post stating that some might be unlocked but others won't. My question is simply: When I buy an adventure does it unlock the monsters that are in the adventure but are sourced from the MM?
Follow up question, if they are not all unlocked does this is also include the monsters in Beyond Dragon of Icespire Peak trilogy of adventures? Will I need to MM to run those adventures?
I'm new to D&D and D&D Beyond so sorry if this is a stupid question.
So how DDB works is that if you buy content in one book, and it is duplicated in another book, it will be unlocked/discounted if you buy another book with the same monster/class/etc. So you won't be paying for duplicated material.
So for your question, the monsters that have stat blocks printed in CoS will have been unlocked, while those just mentioned for encounters but not given stats will not be. The exception being if they were released by wotc in the free basic materials. You will probably need to buy the monster manual if you want to use the monsters on DDB.

Ahh, thanks so much! Do you happen to know if this is the case for the trilogy of adventures you get for getting Dragon of Icespire Keep on D&D beyond. I'm assuming I'll have to get the MM, but I was curious since you don't need it for DoIK.
Hmm, I'm clicking through all of the encounters in Curse of Strahd and it seems I do have all of them, even the ones in the monster manual. I admittedly haven't gone through every single monsters but I clicking on everything that's bolded and I have them....weird.

Just for clarity, buying a book that shares material with another book will NOT give you a discount on the other book. On Beyond, piece meal purchases only count towards the discount of the book the material initially appeared in.
Buying SCAG will not give you a discount on TCOE, even though they share some materials, such as the Bladesinger. And if you buy just the Bladesinger subclass, then the discount will be applied to SCAG, not TCOE.
To the original question - when you purchase an adventure on D&D Beyond, we ensure that we also grant you all of the monsters & magic items that are used in that book.
We strongly believe that it would be an awful experience to purchase an adventure and then discover that you need to purchase other books, just to be able to run the adventure you purchased.

Thank you for clarifying, that's awesome to hear! I have the MM physical and do plan to get it on here when I start homebrewing adventures. Glad to know I can do that at my own pace!
