For the sake of discussion, let’s pretend that the “Gunslinger” Fighter subclass does not exist.
Having said that…the “Gunner” feat from Tasha’s Cauldron is giving me goosebumps; and I’m working on a bounty hunter character who primarily uses firearms, mixed with some hit-and-run, stealth & ambush tactics.
Firearms are a curious weapon type, of course, so I was wondering what classes people feel goes good with them.
Fighters obviously seem like they could get some mileage with them…between Battlemaster or Samurai, there are some great ways to churn out some damage.
Hunter Ranger caught my eye, as well…the recent enhancements to the Ranger class gives them some useful tricks, and the Hunter subclass offers potent opportunities for attacking enemies multiple times, as well as boosting defenses.
Rogue surprised me…I didn’t think “Sneak Attack” worked on firearms; but apparently ANY ranged weapon is fair game. The fact that Rogues have a variety of features to suit nearly every style of gameplay makes them an excellent candidate for wielding firearms…their only limit, of course, is their very limited number of attacks each round.
Lastly, the Artificer class specifically cites being proficient in firearms…and while their class features are undoubtedly useful; their subclasses do not seem to “lend” to actually USING firearms. Besides their “Repeating Shot” infusion (which admittedly is GREAT for conserving ammo), the Artificer subclasses either favor using cantrip & magic, or the weapons provided by their subclass.
These are merely some of my musings: I’m far more eager to hear how some people have implemented firearms into their characters.
What class did you select for a firearm-wielding character? What was their subclass? Did you multiclass? What were some fun moments involving the character in question?
Gunslinger is not a real official class. It is homebrew.
If I were to play Battlefield in D&D, I would be an Order of Scribes Wizards and pick up an antimatter rifle. Manifest Mind is a powerful situational awareness tool, and you basically have a second UAV at all times on top of your regular familiar. I would pick Magic Missle (guaranteed damage) and Invisibility (protection and helps with camping) as my Mastery Spells, and Fly (protection and mobility) and Sending (communication) for Signature.
I currently play a Battlesmith Artificer, which does a great deal of damage from range. Repeating shot and the inbuild firearms prof does a good job. You can ignore the Gunner feat compleatly and have a bunch of cool gadgets that lend to a ranged/stealthy playstyle. The first look doesn't show, but the Battlesmith doesn't have to go all up in the buissness of the enemy. Battle RReady makes it so you can be pretty SAD and allows you to take feats like sharpshooter.
