I purchased the DnD essentials kit a few months back. I really like it. I also recieved the free digital content as well. What my question is, i would like to make a virtual game and i just recently discovered roll20. I want to get the maps for each building of phandalin, and all the maps for each quest so i can make the entire icespire adventure online for friends etc.
where do i find all the maps and content to accomplish this? magic items, heros, hires, etc? thanks
You can buy the essentials kit on roll20, then everything is set up for you.
If you don't want to do that, then you can grab the various maps from the various pages on dndbeyond, download them to your PC, and then upload them to roll20 - and you'll have to set up all the walls yourself if you want to use the dynamic lighting abilities of roll20. You'll also have to create all the character/monsters yourself - uploading images for each of the tokens.
You could try AboveVTT for free. I'd recommend against getting into Roll20 (poor interface, stunted development, lack of features, slow, etc.). If you want to do more advanced stuff, look into Foundry VTT.
In the long run I would recommend foundry if you want complex combat and I don't have thoughts on AboveVTT (my setup wouldn't let it work) but lots of folks like it a lot for simple token movement.
Roll 20 is the tool for you if don't mind rebuying and setup time is at a premium but budget isn't as big a deal. If you rebuy the tools you need a lot of the setup will be done. Foundry allows you to input a lot of the tools from DnDBeyond and use it in tandem you can bring in characters, monsters and items that you own. There will be more setup for maps for the adventures but the basic tools are there. Someone on the forum may have actually input an adventure and might have a better idea of the setup.
