I am 51 and used to play d&d with dome friends when I was in middle school. I had gotten a few cousins into and we continued tonplay it here and there into my early 20s. I've always wanted to try it again I've seen different options mentioned in the few posts I've browsed.
So I joined D&D beyond to see what it has to offer and determine if I actually have the time for campaigns. Definitely want to figure it out before I sign up and pay real cash.
I have downloaded all the free content that was available when I set up the app. Even messed around creating a character.withbthe app trying to get familiar with it. So what is my next best step for someone looking to try it out. If it's virtual tabletop is there spectating if your interested in a group or campaign? Or what's the best way to find my online game options?
Welcome! I am also 51 and started playing back in middle school, lol. :)
Check the Looking for Players & Groups forum to find games. Most are online tables, but there are still plenty of traditional as well. Also check the r/lfg on Reddit if you are on that platform. They specialize in finding tables as well.
Dang, I'm 52, but I did start playing in middle school if that helps. (And I also was away from it for many years.) If you're on Discord, the DDB server has a "looking for players" channel there too. A lot of groups/DMs will advertise as being new player friendly if you're more comfortable with that. If you're hoping to find an IRL table and have a game store nearby (Wizards has a tool you can search with) that might be another consideration.
As I started to browse this forum or even watching some videos on YouTube. I see the have a play by post here. Videos kept talking about one shots? I had no clue what they were talking about.
Hopefully I can find a Friday or Saturday game that I can dive into. Have any of you played a play by post on here? What's that experience like im assuming it's not a set time so kinda curious How they work out.
A one shot is a single session game. The idea is that you turn up, create a character, do an adventure through the session, then forget about it. "Normal" play is that you'll do an adventure over a whole load of sessions, all connected together.
A one shot will, in terms of films and TV, be something like The Sixth Sense. You sit down, you watch it, enjoy it, then you never visit the characters, story etc again. It's done. The next time, you might go watch Hitch. Then Hook. Different stories each time, not really interconnected at all.
"Normal" play will be more like the Obi Wan Kenobi series. You sit down once a week, play with the same characters each time. The stories will be interconnected, even if they are on the surface different, there will be some connection, something binding them together.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Hello, i am new to this site. I have purchased some books and subscribe. But cant find how to upload maps and documents to my campaign. What do i miss? (sorry for the misspeling, i am not english origin)
Sorry Kung D I am new to this site also. This was my post saying hi and asking a few questions. So im definitely not the one with your answers. I'm still trying to figure out the best play for me. You know when the wife and daughter are busy or sleeping and keave me alone 😆
Interesting, even my previous generation is returning to game. You'll probably be surprised how the game evolved to powerplaying than roleplaying i guess. I hope you can find a game that you can have quality time.
