I mean, W:DH has about the same quantity of content. Slightly more, actually. Spelljammer is £52 on Amazon, W:DH is £33.
Rime of the Frostmaiden is 320, so around 60% more content, and is £32.
We can switch to DDB if you like, more like-for-like. $29.99 for either of those compared to $49.99.
We can keep going if you really like.

Everything it offers looks fun. The art is great. I think the one strong criticism is that its a bit lacking in content, especially compared to previous books. I mean, not one word about ship to ship combat, and no lore whatsoever about the Thrikeen? They passed on some low hanging fruit to expand the content.
I wouldn't mind needing to buy additional products if the product was giving as much as reasonably possible and there was just too much content to jam it all in.
I don't complain, and with a single exception I don't remember anyone else complaining, that the core rules comes as three separate books that are sold individually (although you can get bundles too). That's because there are 319 pages to the PHB and most of them are of reasonable quality. It's not reasonable to expect the MM and DMG to have been folded into it, is it?
On a similar line of thought, we also don't complain that the Eberron, Ravnica or even Spelljammer with them because they are considered full products.
Can you say the same for the 192 page Spelljammer product? Especially when paying 70-100% more for it? Is it unreasonable to have had those "missing" pages with that stuff that people are being counselled to buy elsewhere?
If the answer to the last question is that it's an unreasonable expectation...then you understand why it's frustrating and why they're frustrated.
That's the thing. No additional products are NEEDED. They are wanted for sure but everything that is needed is there. You may not like it but it's there.
I view the 5e SJ product as an adventure to start playing right now, enough information to get started with your own adventures and an update the old 2e stuff. There is plenty of lore in those old 2e products. That stuff doesn't need reprinting. It would be nice for it to all be in one place but given their constraints of a single product I can understand why that stuff wasn't reprinted. They incuded the stuff that needed 5e rules (ships, monster, character options). The lore and the multitude of different wild space systems are already available and don't need 5e rules.
As far as the tactical ship combat stuff, let's be honest most people aren't going to use them. A few would but it is not worth taking up significant page count to include if most people won't use them. A separate tactical ship combat release would have been nice (like the Dragonlance war game) but they probably didn't expect a reasonable return on that investment.

Dude, That's basically nothing; Doomspace (which is bereft of any real lore or information) is just being sucked away into a black hole and won't exist in a year, the Elf system is doomed and all your left with is... a crappy port on an asteroid. Like think about that for a second: without referencing the module we have one location from which we're supposed to extrapolate the greater framework of the Spelljammer universe.
Compare that to SCAG wherein I get more about (spin the wheel) Amphail and Baldur's Gate then I can about the whole of space. Beyond that we're also getting notes on cultures, different groups of humans, descriptions of no less then 48 gods, perspective on the major factions present within the region, broader descriptions of the wider realms... hell they even have suggestions for how to incorporate the class options into other settings.
Like... I'm honestly left wondering if you were part of the team that worked on this and are trying to run damage control.
And if you're going to argue that it has everything we need then I'd point out that you can probably skip it entirely and just run with the side materials from saltmarsh or the players handbook because apparently you don't need materials for anything.

I mean, my preferences are for modules to
1, Allow for player agency
2. Not overload the party with GMPCs
3. Have fight's who's outcome actually matters.
4. Don't feel like something that came off of someone's Tripod site circa 1994.
This module as it is feels like a rough draft either for an unfinished module, the outline for a licensed comic or perhaps even a novel.
But as an officially licensed product of WotC? This is unacceptable.

Pretty much; Like saltmarsh is still falling short of where I'd want it to be but it (and avernus) gave us a better look at vehicles then a book who's title is expressly about them.
Like, Saltmarsh gives us a better look at running a ship, encounters you can have at sea (that could easily be ported over to space) options for customizing and upgrading your ship, Notes on crew positions, down time activites, oceanic hazards, random island generation, depth effects, encounters with wrecks, weather... It goes on and on and on with stuff that players can Play around with so that you can feel like you are on a ship and it is yours.
And beyond that Saltmarsh came out in 2019 so they had 3 years to polish and expand on those rules instead of just giving us the minimum required materials for a half-assed nostalgia grab.

They felt that 64 pages for 3 books was a good idea and there simply wasn't nearly enough space for silly things like handling, maintainence, upgrading or any of a dozen otther things players might want to do with a boat that flies through space.

Pretty much; Like saltmarsh is still falling short of where I'd want it to be but it (and avernus) gave us a better look at vehicles then a book who's title is expressly about them.
Like, Saltmarsh gives us a better look at running a ship, encounters you can have at sea (that could easily be ported over to space) options for customizing and upgrading your ship, Notes on crew positions, down time activites, oceanic hazards, random island generation, depth effects, encounters with wrecks, weather... It goes on and on and on with stuff that players can Play around with so that you can feel like you are on a ship and it is yours.
And beyond that Saltmarsh came out in 2019 so they had 3 years to polish and expand on those rules instead of just giving us the minimum required materials for a half-assed nostalgia grab.
What, the 7 sentences that tells you to use something from the DMG, a table that restates the range of weapons printed in other sources, and an explanation that the helm steers the ship?

Ghosts of Salt Marsh has more interesting mechanics, and they didn't even bother adopting those. Why are there better rules for fighting from a rowboat in a sewage pond than combat between spaceships?

They felt that 64 pages for 3 books was a good idea and there simply wasn't nearly enough space for silly things like handling, maintainence, upgrading or any of a dozen otther things players might want to do with a boat that flies through space.
