When making a weapon attack, you roll a d20 and add your Strength modifier if it's a melee attack or your Dexterity modifier if it's a ranged attack. There's no d20 involved in the damage; you use the weapon's dice and add the same modifier you used for the attack roll. If you hit, the target of the attack loses HP equal to the damage they take. Some weapons make exceptions to these rules. I suggest you read the Combat chapter of the Basic Rules, especially the sections on Making An Attack, Cover, and Damage and Healing.
Actually I think attack is d20 + str (or dex) modifier + proficiency bonus. Damage is weapon dice (e.g. d4 for a dagger I think) plus str or dex modifier.
I had exactly no difficulty parsing the sentence(s) at all.
Can you translate the second part of the sentence for me? I think he is asking about something like damage reduction from armor, but I didn't answer that because that'd cause more confusion if I misunderstood it.
Hey, you deleted the part where I finally realised what Doomslayer510 meant on the second part of his super-long sentence.
He was asking (at least I think he is) if armor affects the wearer's HP, and I said that it doesn't, but some rare magical armor may be an exception to this.
It was not about damage reduction or resistance, as I initially thought, and beginning to explain how that works would just cause more confusion to him, which is why I didn't say anything about that.
The fact that noone answered that until I realised it in the end does prove my point that the question is difficult to read, and that it wasn't as easily understandable as the other two said, doesn't it?

Thanks for pointing out the proficiency bonus, it totally slipped my mind.

Also, NO weapon uses a d20 for damage unless it’s homebrewed

When attacking, you roll a d20 first. This is the hit chance. This result has to be equal or higher than your enemy’s Armor Class (AC) to hit.
If you hit, roll damage dice. This depends on which weapon you use. This is your damage.
Remember to add the extra modifiers to your rolls.
But yes, I agree with your clarifications regarding hit dice and damage rolls.
Ok people, I've just deleted nearly a dozen posts that were arguing about punctuation & snarkiness.
