I have my comment to explain why I am unsubscribing ready to launch... I am waiting to see what their official reaction will be, but I most likely will unsubscribe as soon as my players have their character sheets and put them someplace else.
I have a ticket in to delete my account, already canceled my subscription but it's not up until August.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
The age of OGL is over. The Time of the ORC has come!
The moment that WotC declares OGL 1.0a "de-authorized", "revoked" or any such nonsense is the moment I release as much content as possible under OGL 1.0a and say, "Sue me WotC". OGL1.0a cannot be revoked. If thousands of us do it, the countersuit will be a class action suit.
Just convinced my DM to cancel our group subscription. My group will find a new platform.
Have fun, it was certainly an experience knowing you for the...about 4 posts that you were here.
Ah yes, because Forum activity is a measure of how much one uses a platform.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Leaving OGL 1.0(a) untouched and making SRD 5.1 CC-BY-4.0 is a great first step. The next is a promise to do the same for future editions. Here's a discussion thread on that.
I am sorry to the folks at D&D Beyond for having been bought out by WotC and are now catching the majority of the blowback since they're being used as the mouth piece AND as the financial barometer for the situation.
I hope you call can weather this.
To WotC -- as someone that's been playing for nearly 20 years?
You didn't learn your lesson with the GSL during 4e, instead, you seem to be dead set on somehow preempting the creation of rival systems by making a deliberately draconian OGL agreement -- yet, on your attempts to avoid fate; you have caused it. Most of your big 3rd party publishers who worked on your Official modules or published companion products have now broken away to make their own non-affiliated systems. Taking their hundreds of thousands of fans with them.
You have ignited a hornets nest in an attempt to secure more money from people that you could have just obtained by putting more effort into releasing more TTRPG content -- with the caveat being you have to stop rushing them so they're reviewed poorly, merchandise, movies, tv shows, and games.
You deserve everything that you are getting, and more - people will boycott the movie; which will lead people to believe that D&D movies and potentially even shows just aren't profitable and who knows, maybe you'll NEVER be able to make another one, successfully ensuring the death of an entire avenue of revenue you could have had for the sake of greed.
Not someone who posts in forums. I am just so disappointed. I have played every edition of D&D, starting with my first game in 1979. I own every edition starting with AD&D. I will be having video calls with my several gaming groups over the weekend and urging everyone to cancel their subscription. Monday I will terminate my own subscription.
Paying user for dndbeyond since 2017. Subscription cancelled and will not be purchasing any "One D&D" content and will be leaving D&D forever once the current campaign winds down. I spent a lot of money on 5e, and I'm done with it now. WOTC is going down a ridiculously greedy path and I withdrew from MTG entirely already.
This is from Brian Lewis, who was on the legal team that drafted the original OGL.
"I could use your help. Our firm believes that it is crucial to our industry that it have an agnostic open source style license that provides designers and publishers clarity on what they can readily use from a publisher’s game without having to pay lawyers to research or defend that use. The mere threat that the OGL, a tool that has widely been perceived as working toward that goal, could be unilaterally be modified or withdrawn casts a chilling specter of doubt and uncertainty on the gaming industry. As the person that came up with the legal framework behind the OGL, and as an invested custodian of our industry, I feel a powerful desire to drive a project to create the OpenRPG License which is envisioned as a truly independent open source license (of the kind that did not exist in 1996 when I started conceiving of this). Ultimately, this needs to be in the hands of a recognized and respected independent open source community hub that functions like Linux. -
Today we would like to announce this effort and create a hub for socializing and refining the OpenRPG License. I am hoping that you can help by letting me know if you support this, and if so, if you would be willing to share a message on your social media platform(s) roughly along the following lines: I believe our industry needs a new Open RPG License that will be system and publisher independent. My friends at Azora Law (OpenRPG@azoralaw.com), an intellectual property law firm that represents several game publishers, came up with the legal framework for the original OGL over 20 years ago. I trust and support them in shepherding a broad effort to create an agnostic open source style license that provides designers and publishers clarity on what they can use from a participating publisher’s game without having to pay lawyers to research or defend it. They will also find an appropriate independent, non-profit home for the new Open RPG License. If you are an interested publisher or designer, I encourage you to join the effort and provide input and feedback on drafts of this license. Please sign up by using this form (Thank you!).
Oh look, here is one of those grizzled forum denizens, a stalwart loyalist, who values a high post count as a gateway to relevance. Well edgelord, the relevant value that I hold in Hasbro's analysis is my cancelled subscription. Go ahead and mock my post count, I made my point.
I've been all in with DNDBeyond since forever. I don't do much with 3rd party content (Though I do own a few books from CR and MCDM) and have been fully looking forward to OneDnD up until this broke. I'm cancelling my subscrtiption and will forego spending any money on wotc products until they firmly walkback OGL1.1 and honor the spirit and intent of OGL 1.0a.

Ah yes, because Forum activity is a measure of how much one uses a platform.
I mean, if a person wasn't interested in interacting with the forum community before, it does seem weird to only stop by and shit on the forums on the way out instead of just unsubscribing and leaving quietly. WotC will know you left as they see the loss of money. No need to throw the drama on other fans on the way out the door.

Actually there is a reason - this is the conversation that users of DDB want to have, whether their post count is zero or 5 billion, every user matters now. You don't control these forums just because you haunt them night and day. What you call "forum drama" is a mass movement of user sentiment. And there is good reason to inform others of our choices, and to do it loudly.
I unsubscribed yesterday, top tier account. It was easy. Do it!

Don't gatekeep. I've seen you around, you're better than that.
People want to vent. We all love this game. They're allowed to want to scream about it to other people who will understand.

DDB is great, but it could be better. Here are some things I think could improve DDB

I hope you burn in the 9th level of hell Hasbro Leadership, as Asmodeus stands over your bloated corpse.
