I can't comment on 2e. 4e I haven't done, but heard it compared to MMO and World of Warcraft. 3.5e despite rule and mechanics heavy had lore up the shithole and a team that had a passion for it. 5e being supposed to be a 'K.I.S.S.' approach even though it was no longer simple. Everybody in WOTC but the exec team and cynthia william and Chris Cao seems to have actually played DnD and what not. Maybe even tried some alternatives.
So what will it take to get the exec team and Cynthia and Chris to play DnD themselves. It sounds like a Cliché solution from 80s 90s or heck early 2000s, but alternative is our current environment.

Just because you work at a company doesn't mean you partake in the products.
I worked at Pfizer for 10 years - I wasn't popping Viagra just to get a feel for the company product.

All the same, it doesn't mean you shouldn't.
In the case of pharmaceuticals, there is obviously a real cost to consider, and they shouldn't be taken without an actual medical reason. However, in the gaming industry, executives absolutely should dedicate enough time for at least a cursory introduction to their own product. Not a full campaign, but 3-5 sessions run by someone experienced with DMing would absolutely make a difference.
In fact, if these two live streamed their game as part of an attempt to make amends and reconnect with the community, it might actually work.
People running service industry businesses typically partake in the services provided. Hoteliers may stay in accommodations. Restauranteurs may eat the food. It's typical practice.

Yeah, but this isn’t a service industry; it’s entertainment.
Cynthia Williams _had_ never played D&D prior to coming to WotC, she has played at least once with Hasbro Pres/former WotC President Chris Cocks as DM

Doesn't mean she understands D&D or its community, but she's had some exposure to the game.
