Greetings! Just need some advice on a mechanic as I'm creating a Sidekick for a homebrew campaign:
So the Spellcaster (Healer) sidekick has an ability called Empowered Spells. From the ability description:
Empowered Spells. Choose one school of magic. Whenever the spellcaster casts a spell of that school by expending a spell slot, the spellcaster can add its spellcasting ability modifier to the spell’s damage roll or healing roll, if any.
Makes sense. Let's say I choose the Evocation school of magic which gives that boost to the spells cure wounds and mass cure wounds (because, as a healer NPC, of course I choose this school!)
My problem is, these spells already allow the addition of the spellcasting modifier as part of the spell, so cure wounds at first level is 1d8+Mod. Does Empowered Spells stack the ability modifier twice or nay? (e.g. 1d8 + Mod + Mod = HEALZ)

Looking to add mouse-over triggered tooltips to such things like magic items, monsters or combat actions? Then dash over to the How to Add Tooltips thread.

If you had to choose between the 2 spellcasting modifiers, which number would you choose?

I should probably make myself clearer :P
So the NPC is using their Wisdom Modifier, which at 10th Level is +4.
Currently a Cure Wounds spell is doing 1d8 + 4 Wis Mod healing. I'm wondering if the modifier stacks twice with Empowered Spells?? i.e. 1d8 + 4 Wis Mod + 4 Wis Mod Empowered Spells.
I guess it would make sense if the feature doesn't stack (as it's coming from the same source). However, that would make the Empowered Spells feature pretty underwhelming as, looking at the spell list at 10th Level, there isn't really anything that benefits from this.

I believe it would stack twice, similarly to how Paladins get to add their Charisma mod to all saving throws once they have Aura of Protection, including their Charisma saving throws, meaning the mod is essentially applied twice.

Thanks for the answer - just wanted to double check I wasn't missing anything in the wording and that I was applying the right formula!
