My favorite non-standard race character I ever played was a Kobold Barbarian because of how terrible of a class race combo it was. it was surprisingly fun, especially when he raged like the incredible hulk and became like 7 feet tall! that was fun.
Tayn of Darkwood. Lvl 10 human Life Cleric of Lathander. Retired.
Ikram Sahir ibn Malik al-Sayyid Ra'ad, Second Son of the House of Ra'ad, Defender of the Burning Sands. Lvl 9 Brass Dragonborn Sorcerer + Greater Fire Elemental Devil.
Viktor Gavriil. Lvl 20 White Dragonborn Grave Cleric, of Kurgan the God of Death.
Tabaxi are pretty fun as everyone has stated. I skinned mine as a black lion tabaxi eldritch knight (black mane and dark grey fur) for fun flavor and RP. The genasi are fun too and because they dont have a solid culture or civilization is a great character "looking for adventure and discovery"
I like Kuo-toa because they make great insane clerics. I like my clerics to be at least a tad off their rocker so they really appeal to me. Since they are crazy I think that it is easier to change their alignment based on them starting to worship something random rather than for a Drow to turn against Lolth. Not that you can go wrong with Blipdoolpoolp. Also they can procreate with humans for all you bards out there.
Gnolls are great. I'm not crazy over their 5e lore. I see them as mostly beastlike and wild not necessarily demonic. In my homebrew world humans try to colonize and civilize Gnolls and it usually goes poorly. Lots of them turned to Yeenoghu in response to disliking human culture. Others broke away from human culture and became neutral mercenaries like Eberron Gnolls because they didn't care to understand human politics. I just think they are really fun!
Also I want to play a Nagpa just so I can say "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" a lot.
Of the official nonstandard races, my favorite is the Genasi. I love them mechanically and thematically. They are fun to play with and I like being able to be a manifestation of the environment.
Unofficial races? I've wanted to play a Pathfinder kitsune in a DND game for a while. The long term shapeshifting (one humanoid form they can freely Change into) has a bunch of fun roleplay options, especially in conjunction with the charlatan feature. Additionally, they have access to basic fae magic. Fantastic, tricky race!

I like my own homebrew races, playing as awakened animals or plants sometimes, and I really just want to play as all races at least once, classes to.
Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.
