What is your favorite non-standard race in which to create a character?
I have played many, Hengeyokai Rabbit wizard was probably my favorite, although I did like my Shardmind monk and Evil Pixie witch lol.
Lately I've been having fun with a Forestkith Goblin Sorc/Druid by the name of Buttonwillow Krinklesack. He carries a barrel on his back instead of a standard backpack in which he can hide in if needed. It is also his home. And the ability to turn into a small tree can be fun lol.
I like Tabaxi and Kobolds for when I'm playing a non-standard characters. I'm not a big fan of halflings and gnomes so when I want to play a short race it's going to be a kobold. Tabaxi are puurfect troublemaker charaters.
Imp who worshipped Neruell. It was an evil campaign though could make for an interesting character in a good campaign since PCs are always going around killing things.
Kobolds, always. Hell, they're my favorite race period! I can't help but feel bad for them. Their god's imprisonment for a crummy reason. Most of them just want to live peaceful lives, but they get a bad wrap because of a minority. They're literally the size of toddlers. Etc...
It would be fun to play a non-standard race for a while.

He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.
There's something to be said for sticking to the standard races, but when I got Volo's guide I absolutely fell in love with the Kenku... they've got so much mythology and psychology just baked right into the race! Lizardfolk is cool, too, but I don't know if I've got the chops to pull off that alien of a mindset...
I absolutely love Svirfneblin (deep gnomes). I played one in an underdark campaign. He was very skeptical that the surface was a real thing; an infinitely big cavern with a giant floating ball of fire in it, ridiculous!
Played a Wilden Druid and a Pixie Monk in two 4e campaigns. I loved those characters. My DM not so much (even though he's the one who suggested both). He knew I played to type and actually pulled off a tri-polar personality. I'm also banned from ever playing a character like that again.
In terms of 5e, Tiefling holds a special place in my heart thanks to a homebrew world (where NPC Shardmind were actually made of obsidian, it was pretty cool). Yuan-ti seem like fun for an evil campaign. And Tritons were practically written for me (sadly, no chance to play one...yet). I'd definitely give Arakkocra a try (though my DM likes to ban non-spell flying). I'm currently playing a fallen aasimar, which is interesting.
All that being said, my longest running characters have both been human. And my favorite was a dwarf. So for all that I love non-standard races, apparently I still default to standard in many ways.
I'm really hoping that when we see the psionic rules published in hardback, we'll see the Elan in it. They've always been my favorite non-standard race.

The last time I played a "non-standard race" was 2nd Edition Al-Qadim circa 1992. I had an ogre pit fighter. Good lawd was he vicious.
In the same game, my brother was playing a half-bird-half-man (can't recall the name of the race) kensai, which I think came from the Oriental Adventures rules.

That would have made him a Kenku Kensai.

I like Tabaxi :)

I played as Nezumi in 3.5 and enjoyed it a lot. Might try to port it to 5e next time we start a new campaign.
Way back in the day (2e) I had a Wemic barbarian that I loved.

I've always wanted to make a Kenku. Still might one day :)

I also had a Githzerai for awhile. They are kinda kool.

Currently playing a tabaxi and I love the new character traits and abilities that go along with it!

I thought it might have been kenku but wasn't sure.
I had a lot of fun as a Hobgoblin ranger in a 2e campaign, where the party were all non-standard races.
