I need a character for an upcoming campaign. The DM will only allow PHB content, and we start at level 2. The campaign is mainly combat-focused. So far we have: a drow bard that doesn’t use social skills, an elf cleric, orc monk super bonk, 2 twin Dragonborn paladin tanks, a sorcerer that punches stuff and jumps over things despite being small and is obsessed with torches, and a wizard. I know. Too many players.
Sounds like you're short on sneaks, so maybe a Rogue?

A character who can pick locks is always useful, but that doesn't have to be a rogue. The sheer number of players means that you really don't have to worry too much about gaps in the party's capabilities, so what interests you?

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

I want to play a complex character, so probably a spellcaster.
It doesn't seem like a very optimized party so I'm guessing whatever you feel like playing will work fine. Is there anything you want to rule out?
Generally speaking you seem to have a lot of melee so I'd probably lean toward something ranged.
Not Barbarian, battle master, champion, and no ranger (PHB only means no optional class features).
Objection,! Done right a PHB ranger is a great character- the thing is you have to TALK to your DM about which enemies and terrains to take. if you do that the ranger is a wonderful, multitalented character as someone else said go ranged, but make sure you have some solid melee ability. Taking a level of rogue isn’t a bad idea either, thieves tools, sneak attack ( ok it’s only + 1 D6 but at L2 that ain’t bad) and an additional skill? Well worth the slight slowing of progression to L5 and extra attack. Since you are limited to PHB go hunter at Ranger 3.

All right. Any particular type of spellcaster that interests you?

It’s too bad you’re limited to PHB content as Artificer might be ideal for you. Given that a half elf ranger/rogue would provide a slew of skills as well as fighting abilities both ranged and melee. If you go that way you want to be on the lookout for (ie tell the DM you want to find) one of 3 improved armors - breastplate, Mithril half plate or serpent scale armor. All let you keep your stealth and the serpent scale lets you use your full Dex bonus. 4+ skills, martial weapons, medium armor, shields, thieves tools, etc. Here is an example of what it could look like:
I would definitely go with a Goliath fighter. It's only right. You guys are only at level 2.
It would be different if the level was higher and the combat element of the campaign was more strategy focused instead. Then you could go with something a bit more lightweight and entertaining. But You're There To Fight

Looks like you need a Halfling Rogue and a Half-Elf Druid!

Since you have tanks already, maybe a Gloom Stalker Ranger? Mix in some Rogue? Let the others get beat up! :)

Okay - so your party already has a wizard, a cleric, and a sorcerer (albeit one playing oddly.) How would you feel about Land Druid or Fiendlock?
Both seem fun, especially fiend warlock.

A Combat Focused Campaign? Hhmmm 🤔
