So I have a lvl 2 Druid Bard who’s charisma is 16. So that is a mod of +3. So his spell casting modifier would be charisma (+3) + proficiency (+2) = 5 right?
but on the D&D Beyond character sheet it states that the spellcasting mod is +3.
So I’m just wondering why the character sheet doesn’t factor in your Prof Bonus when showing your spellcasting mod. Seems like it should.
Druid has Wisdom the spellcasting ability modifier.
The definition of spellcasting ability modifier is the modifier of the ability with which you cast spells. There is no proficiency bonus involved in this definition.
You need the sum of spellcasting ability modifier and proficiency bonus only for the spell attacks. DDB character sheet already shows this value for each spell that needs one.
The spellcasting ability modifier is required for spells like Cure Wounds, Dispel Magic, just to name a few.
If you mean spell attacks or DC, yes, as they include your proficiency as well as the modifier. However, the modifier applies to other parts of spells, for example Cure wounds heals 1d8+modifier - so in your bard's case, 1d8+3.
For the case of the bard, you do add half proficiency bonus to any ability checks that don't already have proficiency bonus via Jack of All Trades, so bunch of non-proficient skills and your Initiative on your character sheet are simply gonna be better without necessarily stating why. Also "Spellcasting Ability Checks," such as when using Dispel Magic or Counterspell or Telekinesis gets the half-proficiency bonus but that won't be on the character sheet unless that sort of calculation gets added specifically in a spell's description in the big character sheet revamp that's upcomiing but no deadline when.

But mechanical when casting spells it would be 5 right?
And sorry, I meant Bard not Druid. I was looking at my wife’s character but talking about mine and apparently my brain got all confused.

Ah yes. That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. 😉

How to add Tooltips
Here is a summary of the three main spellcasting terms:
Modifier = Ability Score Modifier
Attack = Ability Score Modifier + Proficiency Bonus
Save DC = Ability Score Modifier + Proficiency Bonus + 8
