I am trying to make a sidekick using the rules in Tasha's and am a little unsure about how certain things should work. I am using the following information:
I am taking the 1/2 CR stat block of the Pirate Bosun and adding on 5 levels of the Warrior sidekick class because the player characters are 5th level. My question is about hit die. The Bosun has 5 hit die already, so would adding the sidekick class add on to these hit die, meaning 10 hit die as a 5th level Warrior, or replace them, or would I add on hit die only after the 1st level, meaning 9 hit die.
(I am the GM of the game that this sidekick will be a part of, I am just trying to get the npc stat block created within Beyond for them to use until sidekick creation/management is implemented on Beyond.)
James Haeck is the lead writer for D&D Beyond, the co-author of Waterdeep: Dragon Heistand theCritical Role Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting, the DM of Worlds Apart, and a freelance writer for Wizards of the Coast, the D&D Adventurers League, and Kobold Press. He lives in Seattle, Washington with his partner Hannah and their sweet kitties Mei and Marzipan. You can usually find him wasting time on Twitter at @jamesjhaeck.
Also, Action Surge restores on Long Rest and Short Rest. I also agree that Barb 3/Fight 17 looks more appealing. You get plenty of ASI as a Fighter so you could skip out on the single one from Barbarian to get the additional Action Surge per rest and Indomitable per Long Rest.
Action Surge
Starting at 2nd level, you can push yourself beyond your normal limits for a moment. On your turn, you can take one additional action.
Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. Starting at 17th level, you can use it twice before a rest, but only once on the same turn.
Looks good to me. But I think you misunderstand how Action Surge works. It gives you a complete second action, which includes all the Extra Attacks. So you will attack 4 times, or 7 times if you use Action Surge. This is because Extra Attack says that you attack multiple times as a single action, and Action Surge gives you a whole second action, not just an additional attack.
Personally, for the notes sections, I use Spoiler tags to keep things separate, and I use it to keep links to enemy stats, items, and other links that are relevant to the current story arc that I am running.
One of my players has been really wanting to play a campaign with a very heavy water-centric theme. I was wondering if anyone knew of one that exists out there before I start writing my own? It can be something simple to launch from or can be something more in-depth. It can also be other systems as I don't mind converting to 5e. I know of the Cerulean Seas Campaign Setting by Alluria Publishing and the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path, both for Pathfinder, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any others out there?
To answer your question, Beyond doesn't support that level of mechanics alteration. It allows homebrew, but the core mechanics of D&D are untouchable. So you can not change the value of items or how currency is calculated.
You can also just make homebrew feat(s) that represent the other class. Maybe have a feat for each level and every time you level up you apply the next one to your character.
I get what you're saying, but the problem remains players and DM's who buy the physical book and wish to use the character builder are getting charged twice. Once for the book and once to be able to make a character with the things they have already purchased. For me I won't be buying any physical books, why would I when I can get a digital copy and be able to use the content in the toolset. But I still feel for the people who will have to repurchase all the content on here just so they can use the toolset.
I really don't understand your argument here. You say that you have to pay a second time to make characters with something you already bought. That is not the case at all. You can make characters with just the books just fine. The problem is you are viewing Beyond as the same as the books like it's some kind of extension to the physical media. Which it is not in any way. It is a completely separate service. Just like you don't have to pay for a VTT to play at home, but if you want access to a VTT you have to buy it or use a freeware version. Same applies here, either buy the service or use the free version. Almost everything can be inputted through the homebrew system, so if you really don't want to buy the service you can manually input all your books data.
Again, your issue is you see it as repurchasing when it isn't that at all. You never purchased the service on Beyond before, so there is no repurchasing involved. Just like if you buy a book from your local bookstore you don't get a free kindle copy, or if you buy a movie from a local store you don't get a free digital copy. Both of these examples have exceptions, in that a lot of book/movie stores or producers also have digital services themselves and can provide keys for digital copies, but these leads back to the fact that WOTC and Curse are two different companies, and one can not just give you the others product without some kind of deal/contract/etc. Just like a local bookstore can't just say that Amazon has to give you a free digital copy, they would have to buy the key to give to you.
Except WOTC doesn't own, nor operate, or even have anything to do with D&D Beyond. They licensed the rights to make an online character builder to Curse. Just like any other licensing situation, just because you bought something of the original property doesn't mean you get free stuff from the license. And when you buy a physical book Curse doesn't see a penny of that so why would they give you the product that they made for free?
For dice rolling and general play, you can use the Discord bot Avrae (https://avrae.io/). Now for the virtual tabletop, there are not a lot of free options, but you can always just use theater of the mind, post pictures on a shared forum (such as Discord), or screen share.
You can just click the Weild button for all of your weapons to make them appear on your sheet. There is no limit to the number of items you can have "equipped".

The artificer is probably what you are looking for. And WotC just released the revised artificer:

James Haeck released some homebrew minor elementals a while back. I find that they are useful for lower level elementals that are not mephits.
Minor Air
Minor Earth
Minor Fire
Minor Water

You can always look at existing bots for inspiration. One of the best I have found is Avrae (https://avrae.io/).
