I’m putting together my own expense report for how much I’m paying and willing to pay for my D&D habit monthly. Many of the expenses arise from Map Making, which I use Dungeondraft for (currently), but there’s also the hosting service for Foundry VTT (the Forge) and some attendant attachments. Looking over these and thinking over your own games, is there anything you fellow digital DMs feel I’m missing? Or (gasp!) don’t need? Thanks in advance.
$5.00 + $5.00 or $10.00 + $10.00 for Patreon: Forgotten Adventures (beautiful assets for map design)
$4.00 for MrPrimate Monthly (it’s what allows the transfer of purchased material automatically into Foundry)
$14.00 or $20.00 for BaileyWiki Monthly (this service provides fantastic coaching for how to use Dungeondraft and Foundry, as well as offering 2D and 3D Maps)
$54.99 Yearly for D&D Beyond Master Subscription
$9 to $13.00 Monthly for The Forge
possible other UI or automative utility integrations to Foundry?
No doubt and thank you! It’s been over a year since I last played, and I plan on hitting up all the Discord channels to make sure that when I start, I have it right. Initially I’m just planning on Mapmaking for Curse of Strahd, some of Rime of the Frostmaiden, and the new Phandlever adventure (when it releases and the of the reviews + reactions are any good). After I’ve done that I’ll feel more comfortable for my own homebrew mapmaking.
5.99 for D&D Beyond 3.00 mr Primate 5.50 IamWarhead' gamelogpro 8.00 Moltenhosting for hosting my foundry server
Around 22.49 per month
I own License for CC3+,CD3+,DD3+, Fractal Terrains, Perspectives, Fractal mapper 8, Otherworld mapper, Hexographer suite... Dungeon draft and by extension Wonderdraft look interesting i may at some point check them out. as their price points are lower than i expected
Couple things I can think of not included on your list:
- Price spent on books, both official or third party, whether digital or not.
- Physical items like dice, miniatures, etc. While you seem to play on a VTT, your post does not indicate whether or not you exclusively play on a VTT (though you do indicate you are a “digital DM” - I know some digital DMs who also use physical dice and minis for things), so I figured I might mention these due to the ambiguity. Might not be applicable.
- Food and drink if you play in person and are hosting. Likewise might not be applicable depending on how you play.
I don't count the cost of books when i factor my budget for D&D. because as I have had the PHB, DMG and MM since the books were released. My last purchase was the Goodman Games version of The Lost City that was few years ago, so i do not really consider them whe i consider current costs. When my group moved to D&D Beyond, we pooled our resources and got what we deem as the basics PHB, DMG, MM, MMoM, TCoE, XGtE, SCAG. I maintain the Master subscription; I have had my Foundry license for few years now... but i pay a monthly to molten hosting to host my server. and the two patreon addons for the Foundry I have a beholder bag full of dice that i have garnered over a lifetime of playing. I have some minis and crap ton of old mage knight minis that i can use but i have had them forever.
To Clarify I am hybrid DM and i have been since early 2010 My "Digital" Group consists of my cousin who lives in Montana, A friend who lives in Minneapolis,MN, A friend who lives in Park River, ND. My Wife and I living in Grand Forks ND. We try to meet every other Sunday.
My second group meets at my friend's house there are four of us total My Old gaming machine lives there and we use the Foundry for map only. This group can go digital depending on how bad the weather is in the winter. we try to meet every other Monday. Food and Drink we all generally bring our own or we chip in for pizza
In regards to food and gaming i do not consider them a part of the cost of my hobby I like food I like soda. I eat and drink regardless of Playing D&D
tl;dr i spend 22.49 / month on my hobby so that i can have an enjoyable evening with my friends and family playing D&D I am getting by cheap if you ask me
$0.00 Wonderdraft and Dungeon Alchemist for mapping, already bought and paid for.
$0.00 Discord for communicating during games
$0.00 for Google Sheets, Docs and Jamboard for organizing the campaign and providing visuals for maps and combat for players
$0.00 for source materials, as I have everything I need to run a campaign and have the remaining sources I might want on a Birthday/Holidays wish list.
That being said, I will probably break down and pay whatever they want for the One D&D VTT coming next year
Just going to chime in here, for me, I'm a digital only DM, my costs are DnD beyond and Mr Primate's dnd importer for foundry. As soon as I got foundry, I got it installed on a raspberry pi, so no hosting cost for me from that, I've already got the legendary bundle on here, so all the content I need for running games, especially as I tend to homebrew everything
