I personally have a iPad Air 2, but I guess that you'd like to remain on the budget side of things :)
I think that anything with at least 4GB of RAM and a decently sized screen could work well... problem is there seems be very few options for under 150/200$, and the Amazon Fire HD ones, which would be a very sweet deal, use the Amazon OS, which would not allow for the DDB app to be installed, as it is not present in their store.
Should you guys not need the DDB offline possibilities of the app and have a stable connection where you game, then the Amazon Fire HD10 or 8 sound like the best options out there in terms of price/quality.

You can get it to work on the Fire tablet, you just have to sideload it. I'm running a Fire HD 10 which works great.
I use a Lenovo Tab 4 10" Plus and it works like a charm.
That is more like a budget variant.
Using the same. It works fine and smoothly, a nice tablet running almost stock android.
As someone pointed out you can definitely sideload the DDB app and install the Google Playstore on the Amazon Fire Tablets (takes probably like 20 minutes of work), and they're very cheap. I'm just not fond of all the work you have to do to get around FireOS.
I use an iPad Air 2 that I’ve had for a couple of years. Don’t really use the app much but the character sheet works fine in safari and chrome. And I flip it sideways cause there’s less moving between screens.
As soon as I can save the funds I'm upgrading my iPad Air to a new iPad Pro. (I also use my iPad for gigging as a musician. ForScore and a bluetooth foot pedal for playing and TurboScan for saving music as PDFs is a revolutionary combination.)
If your gaming space has reasonably reliable wi-fi, there is no reason to spend a ton of money since you just need a browser to get to the website. The cheapest Kindle Fire that you can get in bulk is sufficient for that.
I used to use a Fire HD 8 but recently upgraded to the new Fire HD 10. (ÂŁ95 on Black Friday)
Out of the box, you can't access the Google Play store to download the DDB app but a quick google search will provide you with links and easy steps on how to get Google Services installed without jailbreaking.
Once done, you have a pretty capable tablet for a very good price and I fully recommend it. That said, if you have more cash to spare, get an iPad.
Kindle Fire works great for just browser and that's really all you need unless you need to access the books offline. No need to jail break it or install anything. Kudos to the DEVs for making a fantastic mobile friendly and responsive web site.
Im thinking of buying my players some tablets for dnd beyond that runs smooth. what do yall use?

ipad pro 9.7" works great.
I use a Samsung Tab A which works great, and is a reasonable price compared to what I've seen iPads typically run for.
I use an iPad Pro as well.

I'm not stupid. I'm just unlucky when I'm thinking.

what has better performance, the amazon or the lenovo
I actually found the Fire and iPad Pro I use to have wildly different performance. Tab switching on the Fire is too slow.
Samsung Tab A here. No issues with the site or app at all. I avoid Apple crap like the plague.
My Apple iPad Air works great with the app and the DDB website and tools.
I use a Chromebook, Lenovo Flex 11. It flips for Tablet mode, works great!

Is this one of the 2014 ipad airs, or the ipad air 2? @Iteems

I currently use a Galaxy Tab S4 10.5 inch and really like it though I wouldn't call it a budget option.
I used the Lenovo Tab2 A10 and was really happy with it. It worked smoothly and currently sells for about $120.
